Overview

Location: Burkesville, KY. Seasonal camp position with responsibilities for supervising and guiding campers, delivering activities, and maintaining safety and program quality.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, implements, coordinates, and supervises an assigned group of children and youth; promotes quality of programs and safety of campers at all times; provides guidance and role modeling to campers; promotes and stimulates camper participation; coordinates and leads campers through their daily schedule ensuring punctuality and responsibility; supervises campers during unscheduled program time and evenings; ensures compliance with camp rules and regulations at all times.
  • Counselor Duties: Supervises and organizes an assigned group of campers during scheduled activities and unscheduled blocks of time in cooperation with camp rules and regulations.
  • Promotes and stimulates participation of campers to ensure a pleasant camp experience; supervises cabin cleanup and work details.
  • Coordinates and leads campers through their daily schedule ensuring punctuality and responsibility.
  • Lives with a group of campers and helps each camper adjust and get to know other campers and camp life; interprets and maintains camper compliance with camp rules and health and safety regulations; assists with program activities and other activities as assigned.
  • Be prepared with rainy day activities as needed.
  • Inspects fire extinguishers and reports to Head Counselor; ensures cleaning solutions are stored securely and used under supervision.
  • Ensures beds in cabins meet space requirements; maintains emergency exit readiness.
  • Stays in cabin with campers at night and provides coverage for legitimate absences with another staff member.
  • Moves with campers to all classes and activities and remains with them unless noted otherwise; both counselors accompany campers back to the cabin for bedtime preparation.
  • Prevents leaving campers alone in cabins; one counselor stays in the room for 30–45 minutes after lights out; keeps room door open at night for order.
  • Maintains an incident report book for all campers; submits reports as required and notifies supervisor of serious situations.
  • May teach a class or assist with one based on experience; at session end, wipe down mattresses, sinks, showers, toilets and mop floors with bleach water.
  • Provides constant care for campers in a safe, clean, and healthy manner; exercises appropriate discipline when needed.
  • Determines supplies and materials for activities; maintains safety in use of materials.
  • Maintains camp materials and accountability for laundry, money, and supplies; prepares and maintains records and reports (attendance, development progress, discipline, etc.).
  • Assists in leading campers during waterfront, nature, outdoor, arts & crafts or other activities; reports accidents promptly and accurately.
  • Participates as part of the camp staff to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and all-camp activities.
  • Sits with campers during meals and acts as table monitor when needed; keeps living quarters neat and inspection-ready.
  • Participates in camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director; may assist with cleaning cabins, kitchen, tables, floors, etc., and with snacks and meals to ensure nutritious, high-quality food and a positive mealtime atmosphere.
  • Music Instructor duties: provides quality music instruction, teaches music theory appropriate to the level, prepares students for recitals and concerts, and maintains instruments.

What We Are Looking For In You

Six months experience teaching child development or youth programs in a church preferred; six months experience teaching music education and teaching experience, with the ability to play and teach lessons in a classroom setting involving more than one student preferred. Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

Endurance including climbing, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate activities. Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate camper activities; ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours. Daily exposure to sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
