Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Dean of Creative, Arts, Design and Media, teach courses in the Photography program. Related duties include participation in department meetings, department functions, curriculum development, staff development, lab maintenance, student advising, and other duties as assigned.

  • Prepare for and deliver instruction and perform teaching-related activities.
  • Manage the classroom/laboratory.
  • Develop curriculum and monitor and revise as appropriate to maintain course effectiveness; assist in program evaluation.
  • Manage equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Assess student performance and advise students on academic issues.
  • Collaborate with the advisory committee in the program area. Attend departmental and institutional meetings.
  • Promote the education/training program, participate in efforts to recruit and retain students, and participate in efforts to market MATC.
  • Support student organizations and activities.
  • Develop relationships with business and industry.
  • Complete program evaluation and follow-up.
  • Maintain certification, continue professional development and stay current in the field. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Educational Minimum Requirements Must have an Associate degree in Photography, Graphic Arts, or Visual Communication.

Occupational Experience Requirements Must have a minimum of five (5) years experience or the part-time equivalent (10,000 hours) of work experience as a Photographer in at least one of the following occupational titles: Photojournalist, Commercial Photographer, Portrait Photographer, Industrial Photographer, Biomedical Photographer, Audio Visual Photographer, Editorial Magazine Photographer.

Must have mastery in the following areas (verified by portfolio submission): Studio lighting to include strobe and tungsten lighting, compositional skills, photographic reproduction techniques, photographic processing operations to include color and B/W materials, digital original photography, digital photographic editing of still and video, video capture with digital SLR camera. In addition one of the following must be met:

  1. At least one of the five years must have occurred within the last 5 years as a Photographer in one of the listed occupations.
  2. Two years teaching Photography coursework at post-secondary level within the last 5 years.
  1. Must have a current professional quality portfolio.
  2. Knowledge or experience with engaged and service learning strongly preferred.
  3. Must be able to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
  4. Must have knowledge of assessment of student academic achievement techniques.
  5. Must meet State of Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) instruction certification requirements. WTCS Certification Requirements Summary.
  6. Must meet Higher Learning Commission (HLC) standards (if applicable).
  7. Must be able to relate successfully with students and staff of diverse cultural, social and educational backgrounds.

Must embrace and demonstrate Standards of Teaching Excellence and the MATC Career Essentials in development and delivery of instruction.

Standards of Teaching Excellence: Understanding Students and Fostering Student Success; Classroom Management; Planning/Organization; Content Mastery and Currency; Teaching Methodology; Assessment of Student Learning Professional Contributions.

Essential Technology: Email, Telephone, Computer (Microsoft Office Suite/Google).

Essential Supportive Technology: Experience with or willingness to learn the following: Online Information Management Systems (INFOnline or similar), Blackboard or other web-based course management systems, technology-based instructional delivery systems (e.g., SMART boards, LCD projectors), emerging technologies (e.g., social networking applications).

Supplemental Information

Hours/Location: This in-person position is a .5 FTE and hours per week vary based on course load. Hours and location are based on enrollment and departmental need.

Salary: Listed up to the midpoint of the range; placement determined by years of experience, internal salary equity, and evaluation of the applicant’s background as listed on the application.

Interview: Selected candidates are required to prepare and present an interactive theory lesson and a 10-minute simulated teaching demonstration, which may be conducted in-person or online.
