Job Summary
As one of the areas within the University of Michigan Library, Learning and Teaching (L&T) provides services and partnerships to support the university's learning communities and teaching activities. L&T introduces students to scholarly practices, connecting them more with library sources and services that are aligned with their academic goals as they grow their studies. Librarians, technologists, and staff in this area engage faculty in the exploration of pedagogical and instructional technology development. L&T offers labs, reference services, instruction, and partnerships specifically focused on the integration of Library services and resources with campus learning and teaching projects.
The Digital Learning Librarian understands technology, higher education, and information literacy instruction in academic libraries. As the Digital Learning Librarian, you will apply learning theories, design principles, and technology to implement general and course-specific learning objects/modules and other library instruction materials for our credit courses and our course integrated sessions. You will also have a role in providing in-person instruction and contributing to Ask a Librarian chat/email reference services and single and small group research consultations.
You will be reporting to the Director of Learning Programs and Initiatives.
Responsibilities
Digital Instruction Programs (50%)
- Explore and evaluate new methods of digital instruction.
- Partner with faculty, GSI's, and fellow library staff to create learning modules to provide alternative learning models and integrate information literacy into the curriculum.
- Collaborate with library staff to create digital learning opportunities.
- Assess instruction practices and assess efforts around digital learning, including applying learning analytics data to improve student learning.
- Partner with colleagues to design and manage a comprehensive digital learning plan for the library.
Instruction (30%)
- Partner with faculty and Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) to design and provide instruction in small group and large class environments.
- Work with faculty and campus programs to integrate library instruction into the curriculum.
- Partner with instructors across the library in several teaching settings to design and teach instruction sessions.
- Share expertise in developing active learning materials and best practices in teaching undergraduate students; prepare instructional materials in all formats.
Ask A Librarian Services (10%)
- Participate on the Ask a Librarian team by providing reference and research assistance.
- Engage in service meetings, log service statistics, and contribute to team communications and infrastructure (e.g. AaL chat room, providing feedback on service workflows and the AaL Knowledge Base).
Professional Service (10%)
- Collaborate as a member of University Library committees.
- Participate in professional organizations and other scholarly activities.
Required Qualifications
- ALA-accredited Master\'s degree or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and digital instruction experience.
- 1+ years of experience with library instruction or other teaching experience for undergraduate students.
- Ability to partner with colleagues across library divisions to design and manage a comprehensive digital learning plan for the library
- Familiarity with current technologies such as Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, LibWizard, Canvas Modules, or similar software and their instructional applications.
- Knowledge of assessment practices for digital instruction.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards and/or best practices (such as WCAG 2.1 AA standards or universal design for learning) and an interest in further developing expertise in this area.
Modes of Work

Additional Information
The anticipated hire date is December 2025.
Appointment is anticipated as an Assistant Librarian, Associate Librarian, or Sr. Associate Librarian. Salary and rank are dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The target salary range for this position is $62,000 to $67,000 for the Assistant Librarian rank, $67,000 to $77,000 for the Associate Librarian rank, and $77,000 - $88,000 for the Sr. Associate Librarian rank.
This appointment is subject to the UM/LEO-GLAM collective bargaining agreement.
