Overview

LIBRARY COURIER DRIVER

General Statement of Duties: To drive Library District vehicles to provide courier services for libraries throughout the Library District service area; maintain daily courier delivery statistics; and provide limited maintenance and cleaning of vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Drive Library District courier vehicles in a safe manner, complying with all applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Deliver books, DVDs, audiobooks, and CDs, supplies and other library materials throughout Coos County to public and other libraries according to the established schedule.
  • Load and unload department delivery vehicle, using hand truck, crates, and boxes to transport books and materials safely and efficiently.
  • Place books and supplies in appropriate storage areas and rearrange materials as necessary for delivery.
  • Perform daily clerical recordkeeping related to Coos County Library Service courier delivery statistics.
  • Maintain courier vehicles in good working condition, including washing and keeping cab clean and organized. Schedule routine van maintenance (e.g., oil changes, tire rotations) and report needed maintenance and repairs to the Administrator of Extended Services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the department.
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Attend meetings, in-service and training sessions as directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

General knowledge of library practices and procedures. Ability to read and use English to search effectively by author/title/subject in the online public access catalog, with or without an interpreter. Basic mathematical skills, including addition and subtraction to keep and tally van delivery statistics, as well as using decimals to retrieve books shelved with decimal cutter numbers.

Essential Functions: Possess a valid driver’s license in the State of Oregon. Behave in a professional, businesslike manner; exercise good judgment; interact with internal and external constituencies to build positive relationships. Ability to work effectively and sensitively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives, and abilities. Ability to work independently with sound judgment. Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information using discretion. Ability to convey a pleasant and helpful attitude with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to manage stressful situations. Requires sufficient communication and human relations skills to resolve confrontations and gain cooperation.

Experience and Training: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree is preferred. One to two years of related experience. Requires a valid Oregon driver’s license. Must maintain confidentiality of all patron information; a breach of confidentiality is grounds for dismissal.

Tools and Equipment Used: Motor vehicles with lifts, copy machines, phones, networked computers and printers, standard office software, alarm systems, book trucks, simple repair tools, glue gun and supplies such as adhesives, marking pens or correction fluid.

Physical Demands: The position requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and walking between the courier van and libraries. Ability to stand, walk, sit, and perform essential job functions including extensive driving for an eight-hour shift, with breaks and a meal. Must be able to climb in and out of vehicles, sit and drive for extended periods. Ability to grasp, lift and carry or move boxes and crates. Ability to push/pull loaded dollies and lift and carry library materials, up to thirty-five pounds, unassisted on occasion.

Cognitive Demands: Ability to learn detailed library practices and procedures; communicate effectively in English; interpret and apply library policies; make decisions based on criteria; plan and organize daily tasks; perform basic math; follow oral and written instructions; sort numerically and alphabetize; shift between tasks as needed.

Work Environment: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable functioning; position requires extensive travel and year-round work inside and outside across the library district. Work involves exposure to variable weather conditions, driving hazards, vehicle fumes, and cleaning chemicals. The Courier Driver may encounter extreme weather conditions and road hazards during routes.

FTE: 40 hours/7-day work period, subject to change for operational necessity.

General Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, subject to change for operational necessity.
