Construction Specifications Writer – North America

Woods Bagot is seeking a Specifications Writer to expand its North American practice. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of achieving results through influencing and relationship skills.

Base pay range

$75,000.00/yr - $115,000.00/yr

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, edit, and coordinate project specifications for a range of building types and scales in accordance with project requirements, budgets, schedules, and local codes.
  • Collaborate with project architects, designers, engineers, and consultants to ensure specifications align with the design intent, technical requirements, and contract documents.
  • Maintain Woods Bagot’s North America specifications standards, templates, and libraries, incorporating evolving industry trends, new materials, and updated building codes.
  • Research and evaluate materials, products, and systems to support design, performance, sustainability, and life-cycle considerations.
  • Provide guidance to design teams on technical writing, specification best practices, and integration with BIM/Revit documentation workflows.
  • Coordinate specifications with Woods Bagot global standards to ensure clarity, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Participate in quality control reviews and contribute to Woods Bagot’s ongoing technical excellence initiatives.
  • Stay current with industry standards such as MasterSpec, CSI formats, LEED and WELL requirements, and jurisdictional code updates.

You will be able to demonstrate

  • Experience in maintaining and updating firmwide specification standards and templates.
  • Willingness to research and integrate new products, materials, and technologies into specifications.
  • Familiarity with BIM integration for specifications (preferred but not required).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Experience writing construction specifications for architectural projects.
  • Proficiency with MasterSpec, BSD SpecLink, or equivalent specification tools.
  • Working knowledge of current building codes, materials, and construction methods.
  • CSI Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience working across multiple sectors (commercial, workplace, education, hospitality, aviation, residential) is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with sustainable design standards such as LEED, WELL, or other relevant rating systems.
  • Strong organizational, research, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across multiple studios.
