Overview
Emergency Communication Specialist I-Basic role at the Santa Fe Regional Emergency Communications Center (RECC). Responsible for receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls, and accurately documenting incidents/reports from citizens for emergent and non-emergent calls.
Responsibilities
- Process emergent and non-emergent phone calls in the emergency dispatch center; answer incoming calls and ascertain the nature of the call; gather all necessary information to be relayed by the radio operator to field responders.
- Work under the direct supervision of the RECC Training Coordinator in conjunction with the Emergency Communications Specialist Team Leader, Center Manager, and supervision of the Director of RECC.
- Maintain logs of telephone communications, personnel and equipment locations; provide ongoing information to responding personnel during emergencies by telephone; track information such as traffic lights out and street closures to keep emergency personnel and the general public informed.
- Input data to standard office and department forms (manual and electronic); maintain dispatch documents and records.
- Assist other Emergency Communications Specialists and Supervisors on various projects as requested; attend seminars, workshops, and training classes.
- Maintain cleanliness of RECC dispatch consoles and equipment.
Knowledge/Skills
- Ability to learn, understand, and utilize skills/training provided by the department.
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; working knowledge of Santa Fe County street locations and geography of the areas served.
- Ability to operate word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software programs, as well as NCIC, ProQA, Vesta, CAD, E-911, and Public Safety Dispatch systems.
- Ability to type at least 35 words per minute; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; good diplomacy and decision-making skills.
- Ability to perform accurately under stress and maintain a clear telephone and radio voice; follow oral and written instructions and guidelines.
- Attend seminars, workshops, and training classes.
- High school diploma or equivalent; must obtain and maintain a valid New Mexico DPS Basic Dispatch Certificate within twelve months of hire (initial training and continuing education provided by the department through NMDPS); must possess CPR certification or obtain within six months of hire.
- All employees must sign a Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily in an office environment. Regularly required to sit, use hands, reach with hands or arms, and talk or hear. Exposure to potentially hostile individuals may occur. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Evening, holiday, and weekend work required. Extended hours, irregular shifts, and occasional overnight travel may be required. May be on call for emergencies and staffing shortages.
Conditions of Employment
Selected candidate must submit to and pass a county-paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening, a county-paid criminal background screening, and possess a valid New Mexico Class D Driver’s License. Must be free of convictions involving moral turpitude. Prior criminal convictions may or may not disqualify applicants. Candidate must obtain and/or maintain all certifications required.
