Primary Purpose Of Position
This full-time permanent position serves as the digital publications editor of the Civil War Records for the Office of Archives and History, building on the sixty-plus years of work by the North Carolina Civil War Roster Project. The Civil War Records Editor functions as a historian and editor of two separate but complimentary digital projects. This position works to share the meaning and value of the state’s Civil War records and the service of those North Carolinians who served in the Civil War by analyzing primary sources, collecting historical data, researching and explaining primary findings, creating metadata as appropriate, and preparing accompanying interpretive materials. Documents from North Carolina’s Civil War era, as well as transcriptions, biographies, and accompanying exhibits are hosted on MosaicNC.org. This project also makes a searchable database of fully researched service records of North Carolina’s Civil War veterans available on the DNCR website.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Civil War-era people, places and events in historical archives
- Prepare, review, annotate and publish transcriptions, annotations, and short biographies related to Civil War history on a Drupal-based platform
- Write, edit, and publish interpretive exhibits on topics from the state’s Civil War era on MosaicNC, ensuring accessibility compliance
- Upload historical data related to North Carolina Civil War military history to DNCR’s online database of Civil War service records, ensuring accessibility compliance
- Maintain database and information, updating as necessary, and ensuring accessibility compliance
- Assist in managing outside contractors to develop, design, update, and maintain a digital publications platform with easy navigation and accessible interfaces that conform with state and federal standards
Position/Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work Monday - Friday 8 AM - 4:30 PM.
- Must have the ability to read, write, spell, transcribe, and communicate clearly.
- Ability to read nineteenth-century cursive handwriting
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Management Prefers
- Demonstrated experience conducting historical research in primary and secondary sources.
- Demonstrated skills in writing and publishing historical material via online platforms for a general adult audience.
- Demonstrated experience producing timely finished copy according to a production schedule.
- Demonstrated experience with digital publishing and/or content management systems (such as Drupal, Wordpress).
Minimum Education And Experience
Master's degree in English, journalism, history, or related field from an accredited institution; OR Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, history, or related field from an accredited institution AND two years of experience in a profession requiring research and/or editing as a major job skill; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description: In keeping with the legislation that created the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, the mission of the Digital Publications section is to foster study and appreciation of state history through accessible online exhibits hosted on MOSAICNC. Division Description: The division coordinates research and vetting for historical accuracy of materials produced by DNCR.
