Overview

Position Description for a Marine Electrician. Serco is hiring to support the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Ships with equipment, and C5ISR system installations in Newport News, Virginia.

Serco supports U.S. Naval Ships with cabling, equipment, and C5ISR system installations. You will join a team to fabricate and assemble electromechanical and electronic assemblies, applying appropriate safety techniques. You will help ensure safe work on-board U.S. Naval Ships and our Military installations, contributing to our mission to protect and serve our military.

Responsibilities

  • Install and repair wiring, fixtures, and equipment for all electrical services aboard ship and in shipyard facilities.
  • Follow blueprints and wiring diagrams.
  • Install conduit to bulkheads with brackets and screws, using hand tools, and thread wires; connect boxes, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and switch panels.
  • Strip insulation from wire ends and solder ends to terminals using stripping pliers and soldering iron.
  • Connect power-supply circuits to radio, radar, sonar, fire control, and other electronic equipment.
  • Test electrical characteristics such as voltage, resistance, and phase angle in circuits using voltmeters, ohmmeters, and phase rotation indicators.
  • Troubleshoot electrical equipment and circuits using appropriate test equipment to determine maintenance, repairs, or replacement needs.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of generators, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, electrical motors, distribution panels, alarm and lighting circuits.
  • Conduct insulation resistance measurements of electrical cables to determine condition and identify repairs or replacements as required.
  • Maintain adequate inventories of electrical spare parts and requisition replacements as required.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds and carry/push/pull up to 40 pounds for the majority of shift while in standing, crouching, or walking positions; safety-critical work.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance.
  • High School Diploma.
  • 6+ months of experience in wire/cable pulling or electrical components.
  • Ability to obtain and gain access to shipyards (NAVSTA & DBIDS), undergo a background investigation and pass a drug screening.
  • Ability to obtain an OSHA certification.
  • Ability to work in high-heat spaces, climb shipyard dry dock stairs/ladders, and work in kneeling positions for cable layout under false decking.
  • Attention to safety and ability to wear respirator and proper PPE throughout the shift.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 10% to various work sites around the area.

Preferred Experience

  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Shipboard experience.
  • OSHA 10 certification.
  • Familiarization with NAVSEA, standard concepts, practices, and procedures in electrical repair, fabrication, and installation.
