Overview
We have 1 opening for an 8-hour, 11-month employee in Transportation. The work hours are 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Review experience and license and/or certification requirements before applying.
Basic Function
Under general supervision, to plan, coordinate and organize a classroom and behind the wheel bus driver training program; to review bus drivers to ensure that a high standard of performance is maintained; to drive a bus on assigned routes; and to do other related work as required.
Experience and Education Requirement
- Experience: Three (3) years of experience in the operation of a school bus, including one (1) year involved with a school bus driver-training program.
- Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by training or coursework pertaining to school bus driver training.
License and/or Certificate Requirement
- Possession of a valid Class A or B California motor vehicle operator's license with passenger endorsement and school bus endorsement
- Possession of a valid California School Bus Driver's Certificate issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles with restrictions 0 or 1
- Possession of a valid first aid card issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol
- Possession of a California Department of Education School Bus Instructor Certificate with Instructional Limitation A and Equipment Limitation 0 or 1
- Participation in Districts Random Drug Testing program
Condition of Employment
Insurability by the District's insurance carrier.
Essential Job Functions
- Plans, develops and implements training programs for bus drivers to ensure safe driving practices in accordance with District and State transportation policies, rules and regulations
- Counsels and assists new drivers concerning student behavior management and other pupil transportation related problems
- Assists in the selection and training of bus drivers
- May drive a bus on a designated route per time schedule
- Rides with bus drivers to evaluate routes and reports observations of hazards
- Recommends adjustments to driver assignments to maximize equipment and personnel utilization
- Performs dispatching functions and updates transportation records
- Prepares management reports related to student transportation
- Develops and maintains bus driver records including license and certificate expirations
- Serves on Accident Review Committee as assigned
- Works with public and law enforcement agencies
- Plans, develops and conducts school bus driver certificate renewal training
- Conducts safe driving and working methods training
- May conduct bus inspections with drivers and report issues
- May serve as relief driver as necessary
- May collect funds for bus passes
Job Requirements – Qualifications
- Skills: Drive a school bus safely; operate school vans with lifts; operate a PC; maintain student behavior; tact and diplomacy
- Knowledge: Principles and methods for training school bus drivers; California Vehicle Code, Education Code related to pupil transport and training; safe driving practices
- Ability: Plan and implement training and safety programs; organize routes and schedules; maintain records and reports; establish positive working relationships; work with customers politely; adapt to priorities; accept feedback; problem-solve; maintain professionalism

- The eligibility list is valid for six months and will be used to fill current and future openings.
