Emergency Communications Officer
Applicants Must Not: Have used marijuana within the past one (1) year Have used other controlled substances within the past five (5) years Have any felony convictions over the age of 18 Have received any DUIs in the last two (2) years Have received two (2) DUIs in the last five (5) years or Have received more than five (5) traffic violations in the last three (3) years Minimum Qualifications: Be a citizen of the United States Be at least 18 years of age at time of application Possess a valid state-issued drivers license Have a high school diploma or equivalent Complete POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Certification within 18 months of hire. Successfully complete three (3) training phases over approximately 16 weeks of training after hire. An Emergency Communications Officer (ECO) answers urgent and non-urgent calls for assistance. You will use radios, multi-line phones, and 911 systems to support fire, emergency, police, and public works services. ECOs need to handle calls quickly, politely, and efficiently. They provide life-saving instructions and maintain communication with callers until help arrives. Due to the nature of the work, applicants must demonstrate awareness of the reaction of others, attention to detail, problem solving and both verbal and written communication skills. Must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a variety of individuals. Remain calm and stay focused under stressful situations. Key Responsibilities: Operate telephone systems for incoming calls. Assist the deaf and hearing-impaired with specialized systems. Enter data into the dispatch system to prioritize calls. Provide emergency medical instructions and crisis support. Monitor radio systems and respond to alarms. Dispatch appropriate services and coordinate agency responses. Maintain records of emergency calls and criminal information securely. May be subpoenaed to testify in court. Performs related duties as required. Knowledge Of: Understanding of local geography for effective dispatch. Familiarity with laws and regulations related to dispatch and emergency communications. Proficiency in using computers and standard office software. Ability to learn and apply new technology and systems efficiently. Skills Needed: Excellent communication skills for conveying information and commands Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills under pressure Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately Typing skills and accuracy in data entry
