Overview

Job Title: Student Library Assistant
Department: Library
Reports To: Library Director
Job Type: Part time, non exempt

General Description: The student library assistant is responsible for Circulation Desk operations. This position requires working independently as the only staff member during evening and/or weekend shifts and will be responsible for opening or closing the library building.

Responsibilities

  • Opens and/or closes the library building according to established procedures.
  • Maintains order and safety in the library during open hours; enforces library policies and procedures; consults with supervisor or other library staff when needed.
  • Operates circulation desk: charges and discharges library materials, collects fines, reserves equipment, registers on-site borrowers, etc.
  • Assists in the setup and use of equipment in the Library Auditorium.
  • Answers basic procedural and directional questions.
  • Provides basic computer/printer support for student lab computers.

  • Ability to operate a computer and learn new computer skills
  • Work cooperatively with other library and university employees
  • Work well with people of varying educational and cultural backgrounds and experience levels
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Strong work values — dependable, honest, responsible, and a positive attitude

Typical Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift, move, and carry a minimum of 20 pounds up and down stairs
  • Ability to conduct business over the telephone
  • Ability to speak and read English fluently

Work Schedule

This is a non-exempt, part-time position during the academic year.
