Overview
Library Assistant - Archives role at Inside Higher Ed. Location: Alpine, TX. Posting Date: 08/22/2023. Until Filled: Yes. Salary: $32,781.
Responsibilities
- Primary Responsibilities/Function: Library Assistant for Archives based in Alpine, Texas.
- Scope: Contributes to SRSU Library and Archives functions in clerical service, customer service, processing of physical collections, cataloging physical collections, and other Archives of the Big Bend activities in service of all SRSU campuses and researchers.
- Duties Essential (60%): Participates in general maintenance and cataloging of physical collections, engaging with archivists, librarians, and library staff as needed.
- Performs processing, box-listing, rehousing, and shelving new and legacy materials.
- Responsible for routing physical materials through their lifecycle using Integrated Library System (ILS) modules in Cataloging.
- Conducts collection inventories and records necessary metadata.
- Files and tracks missing material reports; generates monthly usage reports.
- Collects and monitors environmental data (temperature, humidity, lighting, pest reports) and reports changes to Head of Archives.
- Assists Archivist with hiring, training, and evaluating part-time Student Assistants in Archives.
- Assists Archives staff with Finding Aid creation and updates.
- Duties Essential (30%): Oversees procedures to make physical and electronic resource content available to library users.
- Trains to assist reading room users with handling procedures and to assist researchers, students, faculty, and staff in use of Library and Archives software and hardware, referring to Archivist or Librarian when necessary.
- Supports Online Public Access Catalogs, Digital Collections platforms, Finding Aid, Inventory, & Locator List searches, microfilm machine use, and user troubleshooting.
- Duties Essential (5%): Serves on University Committees, Staff Council, and other campus or professional groups relevant to the position.
- Performs other reasonable duties as required by the supervisor. Occasional evening and weekend duties may be required.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree.
- Skills in Microsoft Office 365 apps, particularly Excel and Word.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to set and accomplish goals independently.
- Ability to work well with co-workers in a team environment and to work independently on various projects (ongoing and as needed).
- Experience with working with patrons/customers and providing exceptional customer service is preferred.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree (preferably in history or English); bilingual in Spanish; experience in Academic Library, archive, or museum setting; experience troubleshooting hardware and software; commitment to continuing professional development.
Other Information
Office conditions: Service-oriented environment with direct public contact. Position is security sensitive. May require lifting up to 40 lbs, exposure to dust, mold, sharp edges, and fluorescent lighting. Texas Law requires a 60-day waiting period before new state employees are eligible to enroll in health insurance.
