Overview
Harris County Public Library (HCPL) serves unincorporated Harris County and cities without independent library systems, with 26 branch libraries, two technology service centers, and two partner locations. HCPL provides collection and circulation services and emphasizes employee well-being, diversity, and community impact.
Note: This description reflects a position focused on creating programs for children aged 0-12, providing customer service, reader’s advisory, and basic reference service, while upholding the library’s standards in daily operations.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service, reader\'s advisory, and basic reference service within and beyond library walls
- Develop and implement programs for the community
- Promote library services to all ages in the community
- Collaborate with the branch team to develop, implement, and market programs in the library and community, including summer reading programs, early literacy initiatives, Family Place, and other special events
- Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with local schools and community organizations
- Develop an engaging and attractive library collection
- Attend staff meetings, activities, and professional conferences and actively serve on committees
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Education
- Education options:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or
- Associate degree with 60 hours of college credit and two additional years of program experience; or
- High school diploma or GED with five years of program experience
- One (1) year of program experience (e.g., youth activities) and one (1) year of customer service experience (for the Bachelor’s option)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Proficient with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
- Proficient with the Internet and Office 365
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment
- Ability to work well with the public and staff
- Ability to exercise initiative and act with discretion
- Must use a personal mobile device for multifactor authentication
Experience and Language
- Experience working with youth groups (preferred)
- Bilingual (preferred)
Position Details
- Position Type: Full-time | Regular
- Typical hours: Day, Evening, Nights, Weekends, etc.; may include meetings, council sessions, or after-hours events
- Salary: $20.00 per hour; Paid biweekly
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Professional office environment with standard duties and screen time
- Daily use of computer and standard office equipment
- Occasional outdoor work and exposure to weather or temperature changes
- Driving required; reliable transportation for work-related duties
- Light physical activity; ability to sit for long periods and lift up to 25 pounds (up to 40 pounds occasionally)
