Overview

Join to apply for the Breaking News Reporter role at The Dallas Morning News.

The Dallas Morning News, Texas’ leading news organization and a Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom, is seeking an experienced breaking news reporter to join our 10-member Breaking and Trending News team. Based in the nation’s fourth-largest metro area, this team is at the center of our coverage, setting the pace when big news breaks and driving smart, meaningful follow-ups that distinguish us from the competition.

Why This Role Matter

This is more than just chasing sirens. Yes, much of our work centers on public safety, but breaking news here can span politics, business, culture, weather, and the stories that capture the attention of a fast-growing, diverse region. The right journalist will not only react quickly but also recognize which stories deserve deeper reporting that connects the dots for readers and adds depth, humanity, and impact.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a proven journalist with at least four years of professional reporting experience who thrives in a fast-paced environment and understands the responsibility of being first and right. The ideal candidate will

  • Show exceptional speed, accuracy, and judgment when covering developing stories.
  • Be a strong, versatile writer able to craft everything from quick-turn briefs to in-depth next-day stories.
  • Demonstrate a high metabolism for news, paired with strong SEO and digital audience instincts.
  • Be eager to get into the community, build sources, and bring untold perspectives into the spotlight.
  • Use open records requests and investigative tactics to push beyond surface-level reporting.
  • Work collaboratively in a newsroom that values teamwork, creativity, and innovation.

What You’ll Do

  • Cover breaking stories across beats, from public safety to politics, with speed and clarity.
  • Dig deeper to find the angles others miss, elevating spot news into compelling enterprise.
  • Use social media, analytics, and digital tools to inform and amplify your reporting.
  • Collaborate with editors, photographers, designers, and other reporters to deliver multimedia storytelling.
  • Ensure coverage reflects the spirit, diversity, and voices of the Dallas-Fort Worth community.
  • Write headlines and digital presentations that draw in audiences across platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
  • 4+ years of professional reporting experience (breaking news background strongly preferred).
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Strong digital skills: social media reporting, SEO writing, basic data literacy, and comfort with CMS tools.
  • Ability to shoot and post basic video or audio from the field.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Why Join Us

At The Dallas Morning News, you’ll work alongside some of the best journalists in the country, in a newsroom that is deeply committed to public service journalism. We value diversity, equity, and inclusion, not just in our hiring, but in the stories we tell and the communities we serve. We also invest in the growth of our journalists, offering opportunities for development and advancement.
