Overview

Job Summary: Works at the Writing Center during scheduled hours providing instructional support to students on an individual, drop-in basis to help with any aspect of writing related to LBCC course work.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance to students at the Writing Center with writing assignments or writing-related course work or projects.
  • Helps students interpret and develop strategies for assignments and course requirements.
  • Assesses students’ needs. Offers a variety of approaches or methods to help students with their writing and revising.
  • Encourages students and promotes a supportive learning environment at the Writing Center. Promotes students’ self-reliance, mastery of grammar, composing, revising, and editing skills.
  • Maintains current and adequate supply of instructional materials as directed by Writing Assistants and Writing Center Coordinator. Provides input on material development as requested.
  • Assists in keeping records of student contact.
  • Regularly meets with Writing Center Coordinator for training and assessment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: Position requires successful completion of WR 121 with a B or above, and recommendation of at least one English faculty member.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Requires strong knowledge of college composition and rhetoric. Must be proficient with or nearing proficiency with grammar and mechanics, varieties of writing processes, and research strategies. Requires strong communication skills to interact with and tutor students with diverse backgrounds and varying levels of ability on an informal level. Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities of the position under limited supervision. Must have demonstrated ability to understand and interpret staff instructions in order to assist students and support colleagues. Requires the ability to understand the needs and differences of adult students and appropriately respond to those needs. Must be able to sensitively deal with students in helping with academic performance. Requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written English. Must be able to operate general office equipment, including computers for word processing.

Prefer completion of course work at LBCC with additional writing classes beyond WR 121. Prefer recommendation from LBCC writing faculty. Prefer experience tutoring or teaching adults. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

May require good arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate keyboard and other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers. Requires well developed listening and speaking ability sufficient to carry on routine conversations. Work is performed in an open lab setting in the Library with minimal exposure to health and safety hazards.

Employment Terms and Benefits

  • All Part-time Classified employees begin at Step 1 of the salary schedule, corresponding to the position’s grade. Placement at a higher step on the salary schedule is not negotiable. Step increases are subject to eligibility, and only take place at the end of the Fiscal Year in July if approved and submitted by the employee’s supervisor of record. Hours worked in more than one position or department cannot be combined for step advancement. Part-time Classified employees are paid once monthly, on the last day of the month.
  • Athletic Trainers, Farm Aides, Sign Language Interpreters, Transcribers, and Translators can find individual hourly rate information at the bottom of the Salary Schedule.
  • LBCC offers a pay incentive to eligible employees who demonstrate proficiency in conversational Spanish when evaluated and formally certified by a college-approved professional or agency. Eligibility to apply for and receive bilingual pay incentives for Spanish and languages other than English are subject to the provisions of Administrative Rule 6025-06.
