Hiring Range: Minimum $51,635.00 to Job Rate $60,026.00

The Harnett County Public Library is currently recruiting for an Adult Services Librarian. Showing a significant degree of initiative, the incumbent performs professional library work requiring the application of specialized library techniques. This employee is responsible for managing and directing reference services offered by the county library, assisting patrons in the use of reference materials and selecting materials for acquisition and withdrawal from the adult print and non-print collections. This employee is also responsible for planning, organizing and supervising adult educational, trending, and cultural programs as well as promoting library engagement and fostering community relations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

  • Provides reference services to patrons in person and by phone; uses a variety of materials and sources to answer questions; locates materials at location or through the interlibrary loan program; and assists patrons with Internet usage to answer questions
  • Coordinates, delegates, and participates in a reference appointment program.
  • Evaluates materials for condition and usefulness and discards; accordingly, recommends new materials; creates and organizes displays to promote library resources
  • Attends public functions to promote library service
  • Provides readers advisory and referral services to the community in person and by phone.
  • Schedules, plans, and implements library activities and programs for adults.
  • Maintains data pertaining to programs such as attendance; prepares related reports.
  • Collaborates with the marketing team to promote adult library services, programs, events, and activities.
  • Pursues, Cultivates, and maintains community, educational, civic, and organizational partnerships to enhance adult services in the areas of basic technology, literacy, economic development, job seeking, cultural, literary, STEAM, and other programming; conducts and supports outreach activities.
  • Develops collection in area of assignment including investigating and selecting books and other media for purchase; organizes sections of the library location for easy retrieval of materials; generates bibliographic book lists on specific subjects; establishes attractive displays; and plans and presents various programs or themes.
  • Instructs patrons in how to use Library resources, supports interlibrary loan program, and computers to access needed information and books;
  • Attends professional and community meetings, workshops, and conferences. Maintains a working knowledge of contemporary issues, trends, and technology in the library. Creates and maintains standard operating procedures for all Maker Space materials, tools, and equipment including hardware and software.
  • Researches, develop, and prototypes innovative Maker Space projects, programs, and activities.
  • Generates reports and maintains records on activities.
  • Participates in other Library activities and programs; performs circulation desk duties when needed; and maintains cleanliness of assigned areas.
  • Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle as needed.
  • Services as Manager on Duty when assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK

  • Master’s degree in library science;
  • One (1) year of related professional, library work experience;
  • Or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license; and
  • Possession of a North Carolina Public Library Certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of principles of library management including cataloging and integrated library systems.
  • Knowledge of public library systems, services, and cultural and education programs. Knowledge of current trends in adult library services
  • Knowledge of standard library procedures and workflow.
  • Mastery of modern office practices and procedures, including modern office technology
  • Skill in developing and delivering presentations.
  • Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate successful programs and services based on community interests, trends, and available resources
  • Ability to assess and assist patrons of all ages and demographic groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to utilize interlibrary system to acquire materials requested by patrons.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to perform sedentary work and occasionally exerting up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This work also involves the physical abilities of grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, kneeling, lifting, having manual dexterity, using mental acuity, pushing, reaching, performing repetitive motion, speaking, and expressing ideas by the spoken word. An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer, to work with color or depth perception, for extensive reading, for visual inspection of books and materials at distances close to the eyes, and for use of measurement devices.
