The City of Monterey is recruiting for a full-time Library Assistant II vacancy in the Readers’ Services Section of the Library & Museums department. This position assists with Outreach and Bookmobile Services, including Library Lockers, planning and implementing programs, reference, reader’s advisory, and circulation at the Library Help Desk. The role drives or assists on our Bookmobile vehicle to multiple community sites and outreach partners. Spanish language fluency is desirable.
Responsibilities
- Perform a full range of duties associated with the circulation of library materials, including computer-based check out/in, account maintenance, cash register transactions, and customer service at the Library and/or Bookmobile.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee Readers Services activities and projects such as desk schedules, shelving, bookmobile/outreach services, and holds.
- Drive Bookmobile or other vehicles to service locations.
- Order supplies and monitor expenditures; maintain procedures manuals.
- Supervise part-time Library Pages, Library Assistants, and volunteers; coordinate subprograms and staff scheduling.
- Prepare narrative and statistical reports; maintain confidentiality of patron records and City information.
- Support positive public interaction with citizens, visitors, library patrons, and City staff.
- Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this classification as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Experience: Two (2) years of customer service and/or advanced clerical experience. Library and/or supervisory experience is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of library mission and services; office technologies and computer applications; customer service and supervisory skills.
- Skills in acquiring in-depth knowledge of assigned subprograms; applying library policies, procedures, and computer applications; working without close supervision; scheduling, organizing, and innovating; effective oral and written communication; establishing positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
- Standing and walking for extended periods; sitting at a computer for long periods.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds; bend, stoop, and perform required motions.
- Manual dexterity for keyboard use and other tasks; visual and hearing/speech capabilities required for customer service.
- Mobility to operate a motor vehicle and visit various sites; general library environment with moderate noise.
