Location: South County Regional, 5801 Rea Road, Charlotte, NC 28277

Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week
Day shift 8:00am – 5:00pm. One closing shift per week, 11:00am – 8:00pm
Rotating weekends including Sundays, 8:00am – 5:00pm

Position Summary

The Full-time Library Assistant delivers a high level of quality library services, ensuring value-added experiences for all customers and performing routine tasks in support of the library. Located in southern Mecklenburg County, South County Regional is the county's busiest regional library. South County is a favored destination for all ages, serving over 450,000 visitors and circulating one-fifth of the total materials for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system yearly. The Library Assistant works with the branch team to create a welcoming and engaging environment for all patrons and leads the branch in circulation activities, including processing a large volume of materials in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Functions

  • Perform circulation activities
  • Process large amounts of materials using a sorting machine
  • Provide service desk coverage
  • Provide materials to appropriate bins for transfer
  • Utilize integrated library systems software
  • Assist customers at several service points
  • Promote the library’s collection and services
  • Train and assist customers on various library policies, procedures, and processes
  • Assist with volunteer management
  • Perform shelving and weeding duties

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge: Alpha-numeric sorting systems, various library systems, telephone etiquette
  • Skills: Technology adeptness, excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, excellent time management with attention to detail
  • Abilities:
    • Adaptability: Maintaining effectiveness when responsibilities or environment change
    • Communication: Clearly conveying information
    • Collaboration: Working effectively with others
    • Technical/professional knowledge and skills: Keeping up with current developments

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum of one year of customer service experience including library or retail
  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent
  • Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted: Yes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of integrated library systems software (e.g., Polaris)
  • Bilingual

Computers

Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite

Work Environment

Fast-paced, circulation-focused library setting with blended desk and active role. Work in an office setting with moderate noise including sorting machine. Schedules require some nights and weekends including Sundays.
