University City Regional Library: 5528 Waters Edge Village Drive, Charlotte, NC 28262

Schedule

Full Time Benefit Eligible, 40 hours per week. Forty (40) hours a week, to include at least one evening a week (11am-8pm shift); rotating weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). The Library is open Monday - Thursday 9:00am–8:00pm; Friday & Saturday 9:00am-5:00pm; and Sunday 1:00pm-5:00pm.

Essential Functions

  • Facilitate access to the Library’s collection and services in a friendly and helpful manner as the first point of contact.
  • Utilize Integrated Library System software to create and access customer accounts to address account issues, process fines, and verify accuracy of accounts and other database information.
  • Provide desk coverage and ensure service points are fully staffed to support customer service, including Access (Circulation), Adult, Children, and Teen Services.
  • Actively participate in systemwide and local events to promote the Library as a community resource.
  • Perform routine activities: check in and prepare materials for circulation, run circulation reports, fill requests/process holds, shelve by the Dewey Decimal System, weed material based on condition and need, resolve and reconcile minor collection issues.
  • Use knowledge of system policies to inform customers of Library card use, guidelines and procedures, and demonstrate critical thinking to resolve inquiries.
  • Educate customers in use of Library services and develop self-sufficiency of the enhanced catalog, Library website, mobile apps, online resources, and operation of self-checkout stations.
  • Assist the public with and troubleshoot personal devices as it relates to Library services (apps and mobile printing).
  • Guide customers to and navigate areas of the collection, engage in readers’ advisory for children, teens, and adults, and assist access to information.
  • Update material records to enhance catalog accuracy, address common database issues, and maintain serials and newspapers.
  • Monitor library service areas for office supply use and communicate purchase needs for requisitioning.
  • Conduct monetary transactions and exercise daily money management principles.
  • Lead activities related to branch opening and closing operations.
  • Report safety and maintenance concerns to appropriate channels.
  • Assist with training of volunteers and staff.
  • Identify/troubleshoot/report technology issues impacting access to services (IT tickets).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of one year of customer service experience including library or retail.
  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of integrated library systems software (i.e., Polaris).
  • Work or volunteer experience within a library or bookstore.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of alpha-numeric sorting systems, various library systems, and telephone etiquette.
  • Skills: Technology adeptness; excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; excellent time management with attention to detail.
  • Abilities: Adaptability; Communication; Collaboration; technical/professional knowledge; work standards.

Computer Skills

Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Environment

Works in an office setting with moderate noise. Schedules will include some nights and weekends.
