Summary

Use appropriate teaching methods to facilitate student learning for composition and other courses as assigned.

Duties

  • Teach 12 credit hours per semester.
  • Instruct, design in-class activities, and facilitate class discussions for courses.
  • Develop syllabi, course materials, course design, and new/revised courses in alignment with department and Academic Affairs policies and procedures.
  • Incorporate innovative methodologies and teaching styles adapted for specific courses and student populations.
  • Be flexible and adaptive with course assignments and duties, including in person, hybrid, and fully online courses.
  • Be proactive in mentoring students in courses as well as advising settings.
  • Participate in departmental and University committees and special projects.
  • Conduct research program or other scholarly activities suitable to a small, teaching university that accommodates the inclusion of undergraduate students.
  • Provide professional contributions within areas of expertise as appropriate.
  • Support department and university recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Participate in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintain comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Model professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy. Maintain a safe working environment and complies with all state and federal safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Background

A Ph.D. in English (open specialty) or terminal degree in a closely related field and a demonstrated ability to teach composition and literature are required. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred

Job Knowledge

Experience working with underprepared students in a small classroom environment.

Knowledge teaching students how to study and develop good working habits.

Background in current teaching research strategies and new approaches to pedagogy will be an asset. Adaptability to instructional needs of the department depending on circumstances. Knowledge of university policies and procedures. Ability to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. Sensitivity to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluency in Microsoft Office Applications.

Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)

Normal office, may travel some within the community when needed. May be required to transport normal office equipment and materials. Ability to comprehend and work with a variety of information from various sources. Able to clearly communicate with a diverse population of individuals. Ability to compose correspondence and reports and remain in a sedentary position for prolonged periods of time. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.
