Overview

The Department of English at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2026. Successful candidates should be prepared to engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four courses per year: Shakespeare and/or Milton, an early British literature survey, and electives in the period depending upon the candidate's field of specialization.
  • Contribute to a liberal arts environment and support student learning across a range of courses and settings.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English or a relevant field is expected by the time of appointment.
  • Strong foundation in Early Modern British literary studies; experience in teaching is encouraged.
  • Desirable sub-fields include race and empire, intersectional gender, sexuality and queer studies, disability studies, environmental studies, global Renaissance, among others.
  • Candidates from groups underrepresented in the field are encouraged to apply.
