Description:
The client, a leader in advanced defense and space technologies, is seeking an experienced Technical Writer for its Testing & Telemetry Business Unit. This role focuses on creating comprehensive technical documentation for end-to-end flight test instrumentation, aircraft data management, tracking telemetry antennas, and on-ground data collection and analysis solutions. The main focus (initially) will be to assist with developing internal Process documents, flow charts, and detailed Procedures/work Instructions for Sales, Operations, Finance, etc. Experience with value stream mapping is a must. Supporting over 200 military and commercial platforms with 3,000+ systems and 150+ antennas in operation, this position is critical to ensuring clear communication of complex systems for defense and aerospace applications. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment and contribute to mission-critical documentation.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, write, edit, and maintain detailed technical manuals, user guides, and documentation (Mil-spec/standards) for onboard data acquisition systems, recorders, download stations, RF receivers, recorders, and telemetry tracking antennas.
- Document real-time data acquisition, transmission, collection, and analysis processes with precision and clarity.
- Create technical content for airborne mission data management systems, including ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance), Search and Rescue, Mission Planning, and Pilot training applications.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and subject matter experts to gather accurate technical information and ensure documentation aligns with company standards and client requirements.
- Review and revise existing documentation to reflect updates in technology, procedures, or regulations, ensuring compliance with DoD-level standards.
- Publish and distribute technical materials, including parts lists, repair manuals, and system overviews, tailored for military and commercial audiences.
- Conduct research and interviews to clarify technical concepts and translate them into accessible language for diverse end-users.
- There can be a shift to technical manuals, user guides, and product documentation within the contract period to assist development efforts; this resource can also be utilized for marketing publications once QMS documentation is under control.
Qualifications:
- 5-10 years of technical writing experience, with a strong preference for DoD contractor background, Mil-Standard Logistics, Big 5 DoD contract experience (highly preferred).
Skills:
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail.
- Strong understanding of engineering concepts and logistics, particularly in aerospace or defense.
- Proficiency with documentation tools (e.g., MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, Microsoft Word) and version control systems.
- Ability to interpret complex technical data and convert it into clear, concise, and user-friendly content.
- Knowledge of MIL-STD and DoD documentation standards is highly desirable.
- Technical Background: Familiarity with flight test instrumentation, telemetry systems, and data management solutions is a plus.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable seeking information independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to collaborate with cross-functional teams and report directly to the Director of Engineering.
- Comfortable in a 50-person team (startup) setting within a larger 100,000-person organization.
