Normal Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Subject to emergency call outs and overtime due to storms/emergencies For Communications Line Worker Trainee: Job Summary: Under the direction of the Communications Line Crew Leader, learns to perform overhead and underground work involved in the construction, installation, maintenance and operation of the City of Wadsworth broadband communications system and performs related duties as required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Becomes familiar with all materials needed in a broadband and fiber optic communications system; Assists in the stocking of trucks to insure that materials are onsite as needed. Provides materials to personnel on the pole or in the bucket as needed. Performs make-ready for installation of lines including tree trimming. Assists in maintaining inventory of supplies, materials and spare parts. Detects malfunctions in equipment and makes minor repairs, if capable, or recommends major repairs to superiors. Performs preventative maintenance duties on equipment. Cleans and properly stores vehicles, equipment and tools after use. Performs heavy, manual labor in assisting in the construction of the City communications system. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The use of a wide variety of hand tools used in the construction and maintenance of a broadband and fiber optic communications system. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Ability to learn to climb poles and work from an aerial device up to thirty (30) feet high. Ability to lift seventy-five (75) pounds on a regular basis, heavier weight on occasion. Ability to participate in the Preferred Electrical Lineman 4 year course, and maintain a passing grade point average. Minimum Qualifications for Employment: Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Possession, prior to the completion of the first year of employment, of a "Class A" Commercial Drivers' License (CDL) valid in the State of Ohio including the proper endorsement to accommodate requirements for department construction vehicles and trailers and to remain insurable under the city's vehicle insurance policy and have an acceptable driving record as deemed by the City of Wadsworth. Under the direction of the Communication Line Crew Leader is responsible for assisting in the installation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground coaxial, copper and fiber optic cables to provide communications to homes and businesses and performs related duties as required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Assists Communications Line Worker II and Line Crew Leader in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground facilities and service drops necessary for all phases of a fiber optic and coaxial communications system. Assists Communications Line Worker II in the installation, maintenance, and relocation of secondary lines, street lighting and necessary tree trimming to make space for communication cables. Operates a backhoe, trencher, directional boring machine, and various other machinery in the installation of underground and aerial cables. Works on or around energized lines with capable people who can observe and instruct as to the line worker's craft. Participates in the Preferred Electrical Lineman's course (4 years). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of techniques, tools, and materials used in power line electrician and communication trades; Extensive knowledge of the hazards involved in the work, safety precautions to be observed, and first aid treatment that should be rendered in the event of accidents and injuries Extensive knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance. Minimum Qualifications for Employment: Possession of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an apprentice cable worker or power line electrician trainee with a private or public utility firm; or One (1) year experience as a Communications Trainee with the City of Wadsworth who has completed a minimum of 2,000 hours of training in the installation and maintenance of either system and has successfully passed an internal testing process. For Communications Line Worker II: Job Summary: Under the direction of the Communications Line Crew Leader is responsible for construction and maintenance of the broadband and fiber optic communications system, and performs related duties as required. This position provides direction and training for the Communications Line Worker I and Communications Line Worker Trainee and serves as the crew leader in the absence of the Communications line Crew Leader. A person occupying the position would be expected to have reached the Journeyman phase of their training which would normally take a minimum of four years on the job supplemented by completion of the Preferred Electrical Lineman's course (4

Locates other utility lines such as electric, telephone, gas, Spectrum, etc. during construction so as to minimize any damage. Insures that job site, workers, and general public are safe at all times. Reads and interprets construction drawings, makes necessary changes and marks as built. Substitutes for crew leader at job site in their absence. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of techniques, tools, and materials used in power line electrician and communication trades; Extensive knowledge of the hazards involved in the work, safety precautions to be observed, and first aid treatment that should be rendered in the event of accidents and injuries Extensive knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance.
