Assistant Professor of Music - Director of Orchestral Activities (Tenure-Eligible)

Luther College seeks an Assistant Professor of Music-Director of Orchestral Activities to contribute to our commitment to academic excellence in teaching, research/performance, and community service for a tenure-eligible position to begin Fall 2026. We seek candidates with the ability and interest in teaching the equivalent of six full courses per year spread over fall, January, and spring terms. Primary responsibilities include conducting the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, teaching beginning and advanced conducting, and overseeing the orchestral program. Additional courses may include music theory, music history, literature, or conducting other orchestral ensembles, serving students in our music, music education, musical theatre, and general education programs.

Candidates with broad experience in conducting various musical styles are encouraged to apply. Applicants should hold a doctorate in music or expect to complete all requirements by September 1, 2027. Demonstrated experience as an orchestral conductor and conducting instructor (preferably at the undergraduate level) is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in college teaching, mentoring undergraduates, and have scholarly or creative interests compatible with undergraduate education.

Luther College is located in rural Northeast Iowa, a regional hub for outdoor recreation, with access to major Midwest cities within a three-hour drive.
