Position Summary:
Manhattan School of Music (MSM) seeks an experienced and creative Scenic Coordinator to join its Theatrical Production team. The Scenic Coordinator will work collaboratively with directors, designers, and production staff to create and execute scenic designs for a variety of student opera and musical theatre productions throughout the academic year.
Domains:
- Collaborate closely with stage directors, Deans of Vocal Arts and Musical Theatre, and production teams to develop scenic designs that adhere to prescribed budgets and support the artistic and educational goals of each production.
- Coordinate with lighting and costume designers to maintain consistency across all design elements.
- Manage expectations of stakeholders regarding the scale and budget of physical production from the technical perspective. Handle projects confidently, proactively, and expediently.
- Provide complete and accurate drafting (in Vectorworks or similar) for scenic construction and technical implementation.
- Attend all necessary production meetings, design presentations, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals.
- Work with production staff to oversee build, load-in, and strike processes.
- Ensure scenic elements adhere to safety, budgetary, and time constraints.
- Work in collaboration with the Props Supervisor and department colleagues to source, store, and maintain inventories of scenic elements, soft goods, platforms, prop furniture, stage floors, and pipe and drape.
- Foster a positive and inclusive working environment that promotes creativity and learning.
- Mentor and collaborate with students as part of MSM's educational mission, helping them understand scenic design and production processes.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Design, Scenic Design, or related field; MFA preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of scenic design experience, ideally in both educational and professional settings.
- Proficiency in design software including Vectorworks, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or SketchUp.
- Strong understanding of set construction techniques, materials, and theatre production workflows.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and time management skills.
- Experience working in an academic or conservatory environment a plus.
- Ability to create and manage budgets.
- Experience with leading stage technicians; IATSE experience preferred.
- Creative problem-solving abilities and the ability to adapt to changing production needs.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, during production periods.
