Breaking News Correspondent (Level 1 Journalist) (New York, NY)
Responsible for coverage of major breaking news in the United States, with a focus on political and national affairs coverage, and sometimes deployed on Los Angeles-focused stories.
About the Role
In this opportunity as Breaking News Correspondent (Level 1 Journalist), you will:
- Use Lynx Alerting to alert readers to breaking news quickly and correctly.
- Publish an urgent using Lynx/LEON within 3 minutes of the first alert being sent. Publish an update to the story using Lynx/LEON within 5 minutes of the urgent.
- Ability to code stories for the right audiences, use appropriate media identifiers.
- Ensure stories are fair and balanced, reaching out for comment, providing context and opposing views as soon as possible in the breaking news drill.
- Be able to cover news across the file including the White House, State Department, Congress, national affairs, immigration, economics and other topics.
- Share skills, advise, help, guide and train colleagues.
- Write top-read global stories on both domestic and international topics, working with colleagues and editors across the globe.
- Deliver initiatives, factboxes and sidebar stories.
- Effectively monitor other media outlets using Refinitiv Workspace alerts, TR Fastwire, X Pro, page monitoring visual ping and other tools to see and respond to breaking news as quickly as possible.
- Compile prewritten stories and snaps and help with other preparation so the team is ready for breaking news when it happens.
- Edit and publish colleagues’ updates ensuring that they meet editorial standards, including those related to the Trust principles.
- Work with TV and pictures colleagues to ensure stories are multimedia, including the correct use of propriety software such as News Planner.
May telecommute from any location in the US.
About You
You’re a fit for the role of Breaking News Correspondent (Level 1 Journalist) if your background includes:
- Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, plus 3 years of experience in a reporting or editing role in a news agency. In the alternative, employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, plus 5 years of experience in a reporting or editing role in a news agency.
- Experience must include the following, which may be gained concurrently:
- 3 years of experience in fast alerting of breaking news.
- 3 years of experience in preparing for set-piece events.
- 3 years of experience in monitoring of breaking news.
- 3 years of experience providing fair and balanced editorial work.
- 3 years of experience of publishing and using publishing software.
- 3 years of experience coding stories and using the correct media identifiers.
- 3 years of experience working in a high-pressured team environment, liaising with other editors and sections.
- 3 years of experience writing top-read stories on both major domestic and international news.
