Student Assistant – Steely Library Collections and Discovery Services

Position Information

Working Title: Student Assistant – Steely Library Collections and Discovery Services

Work Schedule: Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday, 8:15 AM to 4:30 PM. Schedule based on student availability. Maximum of 25 hours per week.

Job Description

Collections and Discovery Services (CDS) Student Assistants will support the Department’s priorities and goals by contributing to projects including but not limited to maintaining the government documents collection, weeding physical materials, and processing library materials. Steely Library participates in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). As a Federal Depository Library, Steely has a legal commitment to provide free public access, professional assistance, and outreach services to all library users, including the public. As part of this commitment, CDS Student Assistants will help ensure continued access to government information. In addition, CDS Student Assistants will be cross trained in Steely Library’s Access Services Department to support broader library operations. This appointment is for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Primary Responsibilities

CDS Student Assistants will primarily engage in project-based work. Office tasks include computer data entry, organizing materials, and labeling new items. Floor tasks include shelving and retrieving materials and maintaining the stacks. Access Services tasks include staffing the Public Services Desks and providing customer service as needed. Additional related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Required qualifications: Applicant should be responsible, respectful, accountable, dependable, teachable, and able to communicate and collaborate effectively. Desired qualifications include experience with Microsoft Office, excellent customer service skills, great attention to detail, ability to complete tasks in a timely manner, and the ability to push a book truck up to 75 lbs. Federal Work Study (FWS), Institutional Work Study (IWS), and International Students are welcome to apply.
