Position
The Director of Marketing Strategy and Engagement will lead the development and execution of integrated marketing strategies that amplify SEPA’s impact, support revenue diversification, and enhance member engagement. This role plays a central part in aligning SEPA’s brand presence with its strategic pillars—Grid, Growth, and Globe—by elevating our value proposition to members, partners, and the broader clean energy ecosystem.
Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Director will oversee the planning, implementation, and performance of marketing efforts across digital platforms, campaigns, and member engagement initiatives. This includes audience development, analytics-driven decision-making, and collaboration across SEPA’s research, events, membership, and research and industry strategies teams.
The Director will work closely with the Chief Communications Officer and Senior Director, External Communications to ensure messaging alignment across products. The Director will also play a key role in the evolution of SEPA’s brand and positioning and will be responsible for adjusting marketing approaches in real-time.
Responsibilities
Strategic Marketing Expertise
- Design and implement marketing strategies that reflect SEPA’s strategic priorities and messaging. Translate SEPA’s research, events, and working group content into clear, high-impact marketing campaigns to drive member engagement, program enrollment, and policy influence.
- Support SEPA’s thought leadership positioning by elevating visibility of member achievements, expert insights, and staff contributions through targeted storytelling and campaigns.
- Monitor and improve performance through ongoing KPI tracking, audience segmentation, and conversion analysis.
- Lead the development of monthly or quarterly performance reports, synthesizing data across channels to evaluate impact and guide strategy.
- Leverage AI tools and technologies to enhance marketing performance, optimize workflows, and explore innovative campaign strategies.
- Prepare and manage the marketing budget, ensuring maximum ROI on marketing investments.
Campaign & Content Strategy
- Lead the strategy and execution of multi-channel marketing plans that support key organizational objectives, including:
- Event and webinar registration
- Membership renewals and new member acquisition
- Publication and research visibility
- Non-dues revenue products (e.g., sponsorships, learning platforms, in-house content)
- Supervise editorial calendars, ensuring alignment of visual, written, and narrative components.
- Serve as a steward of SEPA’s voice and member journey, ensuring consistency across email, social media, website, publications, and events.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Collaborate with all internal SEPA teams to align marketing strategies with organizational goals.
- Supervise and mentor members of the Marketing team, setting strategic goals, managing timelines, and facilitating ongoing professional development.
- Collaborate with the Communications and Marketing team to maintain brand consistency and performance-driven storytelling.
- Partner with the Information Management team to ensure marketing technology integrations (e.g., Salesforce, Pardot, analytics dashboards) support organizational needs and insights.
- Work closely with the Programs and Events, Membership, and Research and Industry Strategy teams to develop tailored campaigns that deliver value to members and partners.
Innovation & Optimization
- Champion continuous improvement and innovation in SEPA’s marketing strategies, including testing new approaches to lead generation, automated engagement, and analytics.
- Manage vendor relationships for creative, advertising, and analytics support.
- Evaluate and recommend tools and platforms to increase marketing efficiency, performance visibility, and audience targeting.
- Monitor, test, and adopt emerging tools—including AI-powered platforms—to drive innovation in digital strategy and execution.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field.
- 8-10 years in marketing strategy or digital marketing, preferably in nonprofit, association, or mission-driven organization, including at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
- Proven success in leading integrated, data-informed campaigns tied to member engagement or program growth.
- Familiarity with Pardot, Salesforce, Google Analytics, Feathr, SEMrush, and modern marketing stacks.
- Strong understanding of AI tools and their application to modern marketing workflows, content creation, and audience engagement.
- Self-reliant, good problem solver, results-oriented. Ability to execute independently and as a member of a team.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with a knack for simplifying complex content.
- Team leadership experience with a focus on coaching, innovation, and collaboration.
- Understanding of, or strong interest in, clean energy, grid innovation, or utility sector trends a plus.
