Overview

The City of Avondale is seeking applicants for a Library Assistant to join the Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department. This is a FLSA non-exempt, part-time position, scheduled to work less than 19.5 hours per week. The Library Assistant assists patrons with information about library materials, equipment, programs, and services, and supports library staff and patrons in person, online, and over the phone.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with library material circulation, check-in/check-out, locating materials, and processing incoming materials.
  • Provide computer and printer assistance and help ensure library technology is functioning.
  • Address patron behavior issues, enforce policies, and resolve disputes when needed.
  • Assist with programs, outreach, and special events; support daily operations and staff as assigned.
  • Educate, train, and assist patrons in the use of library technology and resources; provide information assistance and readers’ advisory in person, online, or by phone.
  • Assist staff and patrons with scheduling and use of facility meeting rooms and study rooms.
  • Refer questions to a librarian as necessary and help patrons navigate the library collections through reference interviews and online searches.
  • Handle cash handling and balance the cash drawer at the end of the shift; perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of computer experience and/or training.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred; ability to communicate effectively in Spanish is a plus.
  • Valid Arizona Operator’s Driver’s License or ability to obtain one by time of hire.
  • Ability to participate in a rotating schedule that may include mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to read the public library catalog, manuals, Dewey Decimal classifications, order forms, and computer screens; perform basic math; write notes on patrons’ records and update technical manuals.
  • Planning responsibilities include effective time management for daily work assignments; may supervise helpers, interns, volunteers, or temporary staff as needed.
  • Work requires initiative, independent analytical and evaluative judgment, and regular attendance.
  • Work involves contact with internal and external stakeholders, including customers, vendors, and various state and federal agencies.
