Sheriff's Lieutenant is a solid career progression opportunity for current Sheriff's Sergeants in the San Diego Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff\'s Lieutenant is responsible for assisting in the command of a law enforcement division, commanding a patrol substation, or commanding a specialized law enforcement unit. Sheriff's Lieutenants may be assigned to any of the following Sheriff\'s bureaus: Law Enforcement, Court Services, Detentions, and Human Resources. Compensation
Night Shift Premium/ Shift Differential - 5% with 4 or more hours worked between 5:00 PM - 8:00 AM. This is a promotional opportunity open to current County of San Diego employees only. Temporary employees, with the exception of Certified Temporary employees, are not eligible for promotional recruitments. Intermediate POST Certificate and at least two (2) years of experience as a Sheriff\'s Sergeant. Candidates who will meet the minimum experience requirement on or before February 1, 2026 are eligible to apply. Auto-evaluation of supplemental application responses. If selected, the application will be reviewed individually to confirm information is accurate and qualifying. Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will receive a notice via email inviting them to the written exam and oral review. Phase I: Written Examination and Written Exercise (weighted 35%). The written exam will be on a Saturday in October 2025. Plan to spend about three hours; bring snacks/water. There is no required uniform for the written examination. No make-up examinations will be administered for Phase I or Phase II. Electronic devices are not allowed during the written examination. Phase I covers knowledge of departmental policies, manuals, codes, and written communication. Phase II: Video Oral Presentation (weighted 30%). A timed video presentation on a topic related to Sheriff\'s operations. Plan to spend up to four hours on the scheduled date. The video presentation will be completed after the written examination. Dress Code: Class A Uniform with full duty gear for the video oral presentation. Notes and electronic devices are permitted for the video but not for demonstrable purposes. Phase III: Promotability Board (weighted 35%). Evaluation based on formal education, training, experience, performance evaluations, assignments, and leadership ability using information from personnel files. Applicants are responsible for updating their training/personnel files no later than September 21, 2025. Resources or reference materials include departmental policies and procedures, field operations and emergency operation manuals, MOA, training bulletins, and related government codes and guides. The promotional process for the Sheriff\'s Lieutenant is conducted to establish an eligibility list for eleven (11) months, with possible extension beyond eleven months.
