WSP is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Technical Director, Traffic Engineering to join our team in New York City, New York. This senior role will be instrumental in supporting and managing complex and technical projects across Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and general transportation IT.

The ideal candidate is an experienced Traffic Engineer who is innovative, results-oriented, and team focused. The Technical Director,Traffic Engineering will bring leadership and skills to help grow our business, oversee project delivery and staff development, and provide technical assistance and guidance in engineering and design for our local, state and regional clients. Our ideal candidate has a proven track record of successfully delivering projects from initiation through operations and maintenance, with a strong focus on client satisfaction and technical excellence. This position will primarily support projects in New York and throughout the Northeastern U.S.. Some project-related travel may be required.

Your Impact

The Technical Director, Traffic Engineering will:

  • Support or manage complex and technical projects related to intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and general transportation IT, from initiation and planning through design, deployment, testing, monitoring, and operations and maintenance.
  • Support the delivery and execution of project scope, objectives, and requirements, ensuring close collaboration and alignment with clients and stakeholders. Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate project risks and issues. Ensure project deliverables meet high-quality standards and specified requirements. Implement rigorous quality review processes, manage version controls, and track comments and resolutions. Prepare and present comprehensive project progress statuses using reporting tools and dashboards. Monitor and meet defined performance metrics, tracking budget, time, scope, and communication details to ensure projects meet schedule and client expectations.
  • Lead and contribute to ITS design projects focusing on:
    • Traffic management systems
    • Corridor management technologies and concepts
    • Roadside devices and technology
    • Real-time data collection and analysis for transportation
  • Oversee and contribute to broader transportation IT initiatives, which may include:
    • IT infrastructure cloud-based upgrades and deployments
    • Software development lifecycle (SDLC) for transportation applications
    • Data governance and analytics within transportation systems
    • Network security and standards best practices
  • Prepare, review and provide high-level technical input on design specifications, calculations, reports, and plans related to ITS projects.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, industry best practices, and relevant standards in ITS and transportation IT.
  • Lead and direct multi-disciplinary project teams, including internal staff, sub-consultants, contractors, and vendors. Foster a culture of trust, transparency, and accountability.
  • Manage internal groups or outside vendors to identify, plan, negotiating contracts, deliver and monitoring performance to client specifications.
  • Coordinate with various internal and external partners, including cross-discipline and functional teams, government agencies (i.e., DOTs), and other stakeholders.
  • Comfortably present complex technical and project information to diverse audiences, including executives, client teams, and public forums.
  • Contribute to and potentially lead the development of technical proposals, scopes of work, and budgeting for projected work.
  • Assist in building and growing the firm's Intelligent Transportation Systems practice in the specified regions.
  • Foster technical development and mentoring of staff.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology, preferred, or equivalent years of experience.
  • 12+ years of demonstrated project management and design experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems, or closely related transportation IT projects.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New York, or another state and able to obtain reciprocity in New York State within 6 months of hire.
  • Proven experience managing complex projects with budgets, schedules, and technical requirements.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microstation, and other applicable design software packages.
  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall, Scrum) and proficiency with project management tools (e.g., MS Project).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams, both internal and external.
  • Evidence of leadership qualities and ability to network with clients and others in the field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience working on projects within New York, New Jersey, and/or the Northeast.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Strong ability to quickly adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Past project management experience and successes with analyzing, developing, and/or deploying TSMO and ITS programs for departments of transportation.
  • Recognized for technical excellence and thought leadership in ITS and innovative transportation technologies.
  • Active engagement in relevant industry organizations.
  • CT, NJ PE
  • Project experience - Traffic operations and safety, signal design, signal timing, DOT experience
  • Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, Traffic Signal Design, Signage, signals, pavement markings, Micro-simulation modeling.

Compensation: Expected Salary (all locations): $139,800 - $249,150

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and may offer additional benefits and compensation, depending on circumstances and the type of work being performed not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
