Reporter, Midwest role at ProPublica
ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.
We are seeking an ambitious investigative reporter to cover compelling stories grounded in the Midwest with national resonance. The focus includes government and corporate accountability reporting or a strong interest in developing that specialty.
We currently have reporters based in Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin. We are looking to add to any of those locations or place a reporter in Ohio, Indiana or Minnesota.

Responsibilities
- Report original and revelatory accountability stories, preferably with a Midwest focus.
- Apply an accountability lens to timely issues through quick investigations (weeks) and longer projects (months or more).
- Tackle urgent, high-stakes stories central to public conversation, carving out a lane amid competition.
- Report and write stories that are important and powerfully told, with a vision for examining major government and corporate institutions in the Midwest.
- Utilize a range of journalistic approaches, from deep data digging to reader engagement and blending narrative with investigative work.
- Collaborate across our team, with ProPublica, and with other news organizations.
- Travel as needed for assignments, training and staff meetings.
Qualifications
- Experience reporting original accountability stories; Midwest experience is a plus.
- Ability to report and write under deadlines, balancing speed with accuracy.
- Strong interest or experience in government and corporate accountability journalism.
- Familiarity with a range of journalism methods, including data journalism and collaborative storytelling.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work well with others.
Details
This is a full-time position and includes benefits. Candidates must be based in, or willing to relocate to, one of the states in our coverage area (Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota). Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Salary range: $90,000 to $125,000. This is a good-faith estimate; final salary depends on experience and accomplishments. ProPublica is committed to pay equity and these ranges should not be seen as career salary caps.
