Overview
We’re looking for an ambitious investigative reporter to pursue compelling stories grounded in the Midwest with national resonance. We’re particularly interested in reporters with experience in government and corporate accountability reporting or a strong desire to make that their specialty.
Responsibilities
- Develop and report original, revelatory accountability stories; Midwest experience is a plus.
- Conduct quick investigations over a few weeks as well as longer projects that may require months of digging.
- Report urgent, high-stakes stories that contribute to public conversation and carve out a lane amid competition.
- Report and write important, powerfully told stories with a vision for examining major government and corporate institutions in the Midwest.
- Utilize a range of journalism approaches, from deep data digging to reader engagement and blending narrative with investigative techniques.
- Collaborate across our team, with ProPublica, and with other news organizations.
- Travel as needed for assignments, training, and staff meetings.
Qualifications
- Experience with or a strong interest in accountability reporting (government and corporate) and reporting original, revelatory stories; Midwest experience is preferred.
- Ability to bring an accountability lens to current issues and to manage both short- and long-term investigative projects.
- Strong storytelling skills that balance importance with compelling delivery.
- Experience or ideas about diverse journalism methods: data-driven reporting, reader engagement, and combining narrative with investigative work.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and external partners.
- Willingness and ability to travel for assignments, training, and meetings.
- Based in or willing to relocate to one of the following states in our coverage area: Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, or Minnesota.
Location
Open to locations within Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, or the possibility of placing a reporter in Ohio, Indiana, or Minnesota.
Compensation
This is a full-time position with benefits. The expected salary range is $90,000 to $125,000, depending on experience and accomplishments. ProPublica is committed to equitable pay and these ranges are not caps for career earnings.
