Position Overview: The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) division seeks non-tenure-track adjunct faculty to teach courses within the MA in Writing program. Classes are offered online, asynchronously in Canvas or in real time via Zoom. We are looking for fiction and nonfiction writers who have published extensively. The ideal candidate will have published at least one book and will have online teaching experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience engaging students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should be able to teach one or more of the following courses:

  • Fiction Workshop - 490.660: Intensive writing and revision; workshop format with peer critiques and instructor feedback. Students submit short stories or novel chapters; two to three submissions per semester; revisions typically required; detailed critiques of peers provided.
  • Nonfiction Workshop - 490.670: Extensive experience in writing and revising factual work; peer and instructor critique; two to four essays, articles, or book chapters; revisions, exercises, and readings required. Three workshops are required for the MA in Writing; 670-1-2 numbering relates to the three academic terms and does not indicate cumulative coursework.
  • Writing Memoir & Personal Essay Workshop - 490.693: Specialized nonfiction workshop focusing on memoir and the personal essay; supports development of voice and style in personal nonfiction; counts as one of the three required workshops for a nonfiction degree. Enrollees must have completed or waived the nonfiction core courses; fiction students may enroll only with program permission.
  • Heritage of Literature—Examining the 20th Century - 490.684: Reading elective examining the historical development of fiction and nonfiction; emphasizes social and cultural development and the crafting of writing; authors may include James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, Philip Roth, Toni Morrison. Requires extensive reading and creative/critical writing; open to both nonfiction and fiction students.
  • Voice in Fiction and Nonfiction - 490.745: Cross-concentration elective examining voice, style, point of view, tone, structure, and culture; includes exercises, readings, and written or oral assignments. This is the dual-concentration version of related courses in fiction and nonfiction.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in creative writing, English, or journalism (master’s degree minimum)
  • 1-3 years of higher education teaching experience in fiction or nonfiction
  • Extensive publication (electronic or print) of original fiction or nonfiction in the popular press, literary journals, and/or in book form

Preferred Qualifications

  • A terminal degree in Fiction Writing or in a relevant field (Creative Writing or English)
  • 1-3 years of graduate-level experience teaching creative writing
  • Online teaching experience
  • Familiarity with Canvas
  • Ability to teach a wide variety of writing courses

Salary Range

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University’s good-faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Actual compensation may vary based on location, skills, experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training, and other factors determined by the University.
