The American Heart Association invites applications for the Communications Manager - Science Media Relations. This is a remote and flexible-location position. In this role, you will implement multi-year strategic communication plans that support and promote scientific manuscripts published in the Association’s 14 peer-reviewed journals and abstracts presented at the Association's scientific meetings. You will translate science for the media and the public to reinforce the Association’s role as a leading science voice and to support our impact goals. You will secure media coverage, establish and cultivate relationships with journalists, and support our leaders and research authors presenting at scientific meetings or publishing in our journals, along with other projects as assigned. The Association offers resources to support work-life harmonization, including access to Heart U, our corporate university, and additional training and support locally. Responsibilities
Review manuscripts accepted for publication in our scientific journals and abstracts accepted for presentation at our scientific meetings. Develop news releases or other news materials, media pitches, and multimedia assets to promote scientific research featured in abstracts and manuscripts published in the Association’s 14 peer-reviewed journals and presented at the Association’s 7 scientific meetings. Collaborate with team members to review and select abstracts to promote, provide peer edits for colleagues’ news releases, develop talking points and key messages for research authors or experts for commentary and perspective. Lead development of news kits for EPI/Lifestyle and Hypertension Scientific Sessions, including review and selection of abstracts for promotion; develop detailed news releases with expert quotes and research author perspectives; produce or collaborate on related news materials such as video interviews, talking points, FAQs, and infographics. Work with the Director and Vice President to implement and collaborate on multi-year strategic communication plans across traditional and social media and Association-owned channels. Develop media opportunities and relationships to promote the Association’s science-related work. Monitor the traditional and social media landscape to respond appropriately to breaking news related to cardiovascular and brain health and to communicate evidence-based recommendations while protecting the Association’s reputation. Lead or support other communications initiatives as applicable and relevant. Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Communications or related area, or equivalent work experience. At least three (3) years of excellent writing and editing skills and solid knowledge of AP Style. Five (5) years preferred. At least three (3) years of experience managing the submission of press, promotional, or related content. Five (5) years preferred. At least three (3) years of proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). At least three (3) years of project management experience, including managing multiple projects concurrently. At least three (3) years of demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines with competing demands. Preferred Qualifications
Proven ability to review scientific abstracts and manuscripts, develop newsworthy ideas, write and pitch stories to media outlets, manage media interviews (including prepping authors and experts), craft talking points and key messages, and foster relationships with reporters that position the organization as a primary resource for their stories. Compensation & Benefits
Estimated pay range: $75,000 to $85,000. Pay is commensurate with experience; geographic differentials may apply. The American Heart Association reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range. The American Heart Association offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
