Responsibilities and journal assignments may evolve over time in response to portfolio needs.

  • Make well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts with expert advice.
  • Contribute to content and strategy for Nature Materials and other Nature Portfolio journals as needed.
  • Commission, edit content such as Reviews, Perspectives, Comments, or editorials.
  • Liaise with editors at other journals in the Nature family and with international researchers.
  • Attend conferences and visit research institutions.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a topic related to materials science.
  • Additional research experience is valuable but not required.
  • A thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field.
  • A passion for science and a broad interest in scientific research beyond your specialty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken).
  • The ability to read and assess novelty, context, and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
  • Willingness to travel and engage with scientists worldwide and help them understand our expectations for papers we publish.
  • Editorial experience is not required, though applicants with editorial experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for Senior Editor positions.

Application and Selection

The successful candidates will report to the Chief Editor of the journal they are based in. This demanding and intellectually stimulating role is based in New York, Jersey City, Shanghai or Beijing, on a permanent basis with an immediate start date.

To Apply

  • A cover letter explaining interest in the position, salary expectations, and preferred office location.
  • A CV detailing education, relevant employment history and other relevant achievements.
  • A 300-word Research Highlight (not from your own group or Nature Materials) describing a peer-reviewed paper within the journal’s scope, its significance for a non-specialist.
