About the Role

We are seeking an editor with a research background in energy materials or catalysis, with openness to candidates from all areas of materials science. The successful candidate will primarily support Nature Materials and may collaborate with other Nature Portfolio journals as needed. Responsibilities and journal assignments may evolve over time in response to portfolio needs.

This is a permanent position within Nature Portfolio. The role is based in one of the following locations: New York, Jersey City, Shanghai or Beijing. The position is offered on a permanent basis and the start date is as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

  • Handle original research papers and work with editor teams on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
  • Make well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts with expert input.
  • Contribute to content and strategy for Nature Materials and other Nature Portfolio journals as needed.
  • Commission and edit content such as Reviews, Perspectives, Comments, or write editorials.
  • liaise with editors at other journals in the Nature family and with experts in the international scientific community.
  • Attend conferences and visit research institutions.

Qualifications

  • A PhD, or equivalent qualification, in a topic related to materials science.
  • Additional research experience is valuable but not required.
  • A thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field is essential.
  • A passion for science and a breadth of interest in scientific research, both within and beyond the candidate’s specialty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of materials science.
  • Willingness to travel and meet scientists worldwide, and to help them learn about Nature Materials and our editorial criteria.
  • Editorial experience is not required, though applicants with editorial experience may be considered for Senior Editor positions.

Benefits and Salary

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor: $80,000; Senior Editor: $95,000. Salary offers vary by experience, education and skills. The US salary range may differ from other countries’ ranges when converted to local currency.
