Overview
The City of Alameda is seeking an organized, courteous, and technically savvy individual for one current full-time Librarian I opening at the Bay Farm Island Library. The Bay Farm Island Library serves the community with materials, services, and programs to support recreational, educational, and professional goals.
The Position
Under direction, the Librarian I performs professional library work involved in modern public library operations including reference, branch, children or adult services; and performs other related work as required. The current vacancy has an emphasis on Children\'s Services and includes time scheduled at the information desk; the list established may be used to fill positions throughout the Library. The ideal candidate will be a technical professional in library sciences and clerical support, with prior experience in a public library or similar environment, and will assist in planning, conducting, and evaluating outreach programs. Knowledge of developing children\'s programming (including story times), library equipment operation, electronic information retrieval systems, online catalogs, and comfort with using social media to create content for the Library is desirable.

Responsibilities
The following duties describe the general nature of work and are not an all-inclusive list:
- Provide in-depth reference questions and readers\' advisory services.
- Promote reader interest and full use of library resources.
- Curate collections for completeness and condition; select, order, and weed collections in line with the collection development policy.
- Train and provide lead direction to library assistants.
- Research grant opportunities and write grant proposals.
- Assist in planning and evaluating programs and services and collaborate on organization-wide initiatives.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education/Experience
- Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited college/university; or a bachelor\'s degree in a related field with two years of related work experience; or high school graduate with four years of library-related experience.
- No experience required, but one year of professional library experience is desirable.
- Proficiency in English and Spanish, Chinese, or Vietnamese is desirable.
Knowledge
Knowledge of modern public library organization, services, library administration, equipment operation, information retrieval systems, online catalogs, collection development, and reference techniques.
Ability
Ability to perform professional library work, promote library services, develop and evaluate programs, operate library equipment, apply policies, maintain records, plan and evaluate work, and communicate effectively with staff and the public. Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate assigned clerical staff.
Other Requirements
- Possession of a valid California Driver\'s License with satisfactory driving record if operation of a vehicle is required to perform essential functions.
Special Requirements
Ability to work rotating and/or irregular shifts, including nights and weekends, and to adjust work schedules as needed.
Selection Process
The examination process may include an application and supplemental questionnaire evaluation, a written exam, a performance exam, and/or an oral interview. Qualified applicants will be notified of exam details in advance. Final selection is made from an Eligible List by the Department Head with possible additional procedures. Placement on the Eligible List does not guarantee employment. A thorough reference check, and possibly a background check, will be conducted prior to appointment.
