Overview
Nurse Clinician, Vascular Surgery – UI Heart and Vascular Center. Coordinates and facilitates patient care across multiple disciplines within UI Health Care and the community, including home health agencies and referring physicians. Provides nurse triage, develops and implements patient/family health education, and supports continuity of care across campus locations and community settings.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and facilitate patient care between multiple disciplines within UIHC and the community; oversee patient flow through the Heart and Vascular Clinic.
- Provide direct nursing care when necessary and follow universal precautions.
- Coordinate care to optimize use of supportive services, pre-schedule testing, follow up on results with patients and physicians, obtain medical history, arrange follow-up appointments, and provide disease and medication education.
- Act as clinical resource/consultant for vascular patient populations; participate in managed care program requirements.
- Communicate autonomously with health care team, referring physicians, and facilities; revise care plans via telephone within collaborative protocols; perform telephone triage and facilitate medication refills as needed.
- Provide cross-coverage for other UI Heart & Vascular Center Nurse Coordinators as needed; perform on-call, clinical duties, and special projects.
- Contribute to regulatory compliance and accreditation efforts; develop and deliver patient/family education tailored to individual needs.
- Participate in quality assessment and improvement programs using risk and quality data; apply nursing research to improve practice.
- Follow policies and procedures of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the UI Heart and Vascular Center; undertake other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Certification and Licensure
- Education: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing required.
- Experience: Minimum 1 year providing direct nursing care or management/supervision of cardiovascular medical/surgical patient population; ability to work autonomously in a high-volume ambulatory setting; excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated knowledge and clinical expertise in vascular care.
- Certification/Licensure: Current BLS certification by start date; current nursing license in Iowa by start date.
Desired Qualifications
- 3 years of direct nursing care or management/supervision of cardiovascular patients.
- 1–3 years experience with wound care.
- Strong organization, time management, and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and the health care team.
- Current job-related professional certification.
