Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association-accredited library school and 5 to 7 years of related managerial experience in library technical services.

Job Summary:

The Head of Technical Services provides leadership, coordination, and administration of all technical services operations and procedures, including acquisitions, serials, cataloging, collection development of digital & print resources, and supervises professional and support staff.

Scope:  Moody Medical Library and all schools

Job Duties:

  • Manages and executes all technical service functions and procedures, including acquisitions, cataloging, processing, and serials control
  • Coordinates the collection development of digital and print resources
  • Manages and maintains the automated and integrated library systems and other applications that support library services
  • Maintains an accurate and current record of library collections
  • Maintains current awareness of new products, developments, and standards in technical services and library technology
  • Communicates with vendors and contributes to negotiation and licensing of library resources
  • Creates documentation and instructs staff on automated systems, new technology, and technical service procedures
  • Facilitates access to electronic resources
  • Evaluates, revises, and formulates policies related to technical services
  • Maintains statistics and produces related management reports
  • Investigates, evaluates, and implements continuous improvement of technical services operations
  • Responsible for the recruitment, retention, and development of the technical services staff, including performance appraisals, discipline, hiring, and interviewing
  • Leads staff meetings and represents the department at meetings, within the UTMB community, and with other libraries and librarians throughout the region and the country
  • Participates in relevant conferences, workshops, and seminars and serves as a member on appropriate planning groups
  • Evaluates unit performance in meeting operational goals and objectives
  • Develops goals and objectives, assesses future needs, and develops both short- and long-range plans
  • Performs other library duties and participates in special projects as needed

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Advanced proficiency in descriptive cataloging and subject classification of health-related materials in all formats, including rare books and manuscripts
  • Experience with managing integrated library systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AACR2R, MARC format, NLM, LC classification, authority control and bibliographic utilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in library automation technology
  • Demonstrated ability to work quickly, prioritize and manage tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, professional environment
  • Meticulous attention to detail, efficiency, and thoroughness
  • Strong leadership, analytical, organizational, and project management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills; displays good judgment in decision-making and project management
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to train and work effectively with individuals at all levels

  • Advanced proficiency in Windows applications, Microsoft Office, and Outlook
