Overview
Library Assistant I - North Branch - Part Time: Under the supervision of the Customer Service Manager or Branch Manager, assists customers with registering for library cards and using the self-check system. Answers questions about library accounts and solves problems for library customers. Provides prompt and friendly customer service to patrons and assists them with a variety of tasks relating to their use of library materials. Works with the circulation team to handle the flow of items.
Responsibilities
- Serve at the circulation desk checking in and checking out library materials, registering patrons, collecting overdue fines, and assisting patrons with directional and reference information.
- Input data into the library database regarding patron information and library materials.
- Shelve materials, read shelves, and create displays to maintain a neat and orderly library collection.
- Conduct regular inventory of the paperback collection and organize the newspaper rack, ensuring both areas are in good order.
- Provide Readers Advisory service to library patrons and staff.
- Assist the public in using the library's online catalog and digital resources.
- Help the public with hands-on computer assistance and photocopying assistance.
- Maintain and clean the audiovisual collections.
- Assist with holds, claims returned and missing items on a routine basis, and clear materials as necessary.
- Assist with interlibrary loan tasks.
- Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of library policies, procedures, systems, and services including the Dewey Decimal System; bibliographic databases and related search procedures; working knowledge of library collections (circulation and reference).
- Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite; strong internet search capability and techniques.
- Ability to operate a computer and library equipment accurately; deliver public service with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, communicate clearly, and work as a team member to achieve the division’s mission.
- Learn to use the computerized circulation system; perform routine library functions quickly and accurately; learn money collection procedures.
- Provide courteous, tactful service to library customers and staff; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Experience and Education
- One (1) year of public contact and/or customer service experience, and familiarity with basic library procedures and computers required; prior clerical or library experience preferred.
- High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree preferred.
- A valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 90 days, or a military waiver preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Ability to push or transport a loaded cart weighing up to 150 pounds; ability to travel to different work sites.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends with reliable attendance.
- Manual dexterity to operate a computer and telephone equipment.
- Physical demand: Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, overhead work, fine dexterity, kneeling, bending, twisting, crawling, climbing, balancing, vision, hearing, and other specified requirements as described.
