The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a creative and collaborative graphics professional to join our agency graphics team and be a leader in design excellence for transportation supporting the Northwest Region communications team. In this role, you will play a key part in supporting WSDOT’s mission by conceptualizing, designing, and producing high-quality digital, multimedia, and print materials that clearly communicate complex transportation concepts to diverse audiences. This position will work closely with the region communications team to partner with engineers, planners and executives to advise on effective visual strategies, develop compelling content, and ensure consistency with agency brand standards. A successful candidate will bring strong skills in graphic design, strategic collaboration, and visual storytelling, and possess the ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines while fostering a respectful, inclusive, and innovative work environment.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Multimedia Designer will:

  • Strategically advise communications staff and content authors to determine the most appropriate design media and methods for their communication needs.
  • Review content to determine the best possible course of action for using imagery and design.
  • Use independent judgment, innovation, and creativity to work with internal customers to develop, design, illustrate, layout and/or format materials for web, print or electronic distribution.
  • Ensure graphic and web products comply with agency standards, branding, and logo identity guidelines; check product compliance with guidelines for Americans with Disabilities Act and Title VI, and Section 508 web accessibility requirements.
  • Work to establish, manage and enforce web content and standards in support of agency branding, goals, and policies.
  • Conceive, design, and produce computer-generated graphic products using design software for page layout (InDesign), illustration (Illustrator), photo manipulation (Photoshop), animation (After Effects), project and general map work (ArcGIS).
  • Conceive, create, and manipulate photos to be converted into formats for graphic design, for print, and for web.
  • Use basic web skills to produce visual images and content to support web projects as required.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Graphic Design Expertise: Expert-level multimedia graphic design experience with the ability to create, design, and edit materials that follow agency brand guidelines and professional design standards for digital, multimedia, and print use.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office applications to produce high-quality visuals and presentations.
  • Electronic Illustration Proficiency: Skilled in methods and techniques of electronic illustration, and page layout for both print and electronic distribution.
  • Problem-Solving and Innovation: Ability to identify design needs, develop effective solutions, and deliver creative approaches that clearly communicate complex information.
  • Public Service Commitment: Dedicated to serving the public, particularly underserved and under-resourced communities, and advancing equity, inclusion, and racial justice through visual communication.
  • Respect and Equity: Demonstrated ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Multimedia Production: Experience producing video content, animation/motion graphics, and digital assets optimized for mobile, tablet, desktop, and social media platforms.
  • Independent Work and Initiative: Ability to work independently, identify challenges, develop strategies, and implement solutions with minimal oversight.
  • Relationship Building: Skilled at fostering positive working relationships and maintaining professionalism under pressure, conflict, or tight deadlines.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple competing projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Public Engagement Knowledge: Understanding of public relations, public involvement, marketing, customer service, transportation systems, construction, and community relations.
  • High-Pressure Communication: Familiarity with high-risk or high-stress communications, media relations, and political considerations when developing public-facing materials.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
