Job Summary:

The Technical Writer II is responsible for creating and revising complex technical documentation to support the marketing, operation, repair, and maintenance of company products. This includes ensuring documents conform to company and government standards, engineering specifications, and language usage principles. The role involves using advanced publishing software to produce product descriptions, functional and operating procedures, maintenance and repair guides, illustrated parts breakdowns (IPBs), and other technical materials. The writer collaborates with engineering teams, interprets technical data, and may assist in validating procedures and estimating project requirements. The position also involves contributing to documentation design and staying current with industry trends and practices.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create and revise technical documentation using publishing software.

• Ensure compliance with customer requirements, government specifications, and engineering standards.

• Research and consult with engineering staff to develop accurate documentation.

• Analyze and interpret engineering drawings and technical data.

• Assist in validating written procedures for equipment.

• Evaluate and request illustrations/graphics for documentation.

• Provide input into time and cost estimates for documentation projects.

• Contribute to the design, format, and style of technical documentation.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and practices.

• Ensure a safe work environment and compliance with safety policies.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus 2 additional years of relevant experience.

• Working knowledge of hydraulics, mechanics, electronics, and system operations.

• Proficiency in publication software and XML Authoring Tools (e.g., Arbortext Epic Editor, Oxygen).

• Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Access is a plus).

• Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat Professional or similar PDF markup tools.

• Ability to understand and translate engineering designs into clear, user-friendly documentation.

• Experience writing technical documentation of limited scope and complexity.

• Strong attention to detail and command of the English language.

• Mechanical/Electrical/Operator technical writing experience, preferably in the defense industry.

• Experience with validation/verification and on-vehicle documentation.

• Familiarity with Content Management Systems (CMS).

• Customer interaction and service skills.

• Ability to work with diverse teams across multiple locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in the defense industry.

• Experience in the automotive industry.

• Basic understanding of IETM functionality, development processes, and markup languages.

• Familiarity with relevant military and commercial standards.
