Title: Senior Technical Writer

Location: Sterling Heights, MI

Duration: 7 Months

Max Pay Rate: $49.05/hr

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Technical Writer to join our team in Sterling Heights, MI. In this role, you will be responsible for creating and revising complex technical documentation that supports the marketing, operation, repair, and maintenance of advanced defense systems. You will collaborate closely with engineering teams to translate technical data into clear, user-friendly content that meets government and customer standards.

Responsibilities

• Develop and update technical documentation including product descriptions, operating procedures, fault isolation, maintenance instructions, and illustrated parts breakdowns (IPBs).
• Ensure all documentation complies with company, customer, and government standards.
• Analyze engineering drawings and technical data to produce accurate and comprehensive manuals.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to gather information and validate content.
• Evaluate and request illustrations and graphics to enhance documentation clarity.
• Participate in validation and verification activities, including on-vehicle testing.
• Provide input on documentation format, style, and structure.
• Estimate time and cost for documentation projects and ensure timely delivery.
• Interface with customers to address technical content and documentation issues.
• Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and best practices.

Required Skills

• Strong understanding of hydraulics, mechanics, electronics, and system operations.
• Proficiency in XML authoring tools (e.g., Arbortext Epic Editor, Oxygen).
• Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Access is a plus).
• Skilled in Adobe Acrobat Professional or similar PDF markup tools.
• Familiarity with IETM development processes and CMS platforms.
• Ability to interpret complex engineering designs and translate them into accessible language.
• Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and command of English.
• Strong customer service and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Experience in the defense industry preferred.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant technical writing experience, preferably in the defense sector.
