Overview
Library Assistant Coordinator - Youth Programming Coordinator. This role oversees public library functions within Manatee County, with a focus on youth programming and branch services. It is a customer-facing professional position that may involve supervising others and ensuring a safe, welcoming, and well-organized library environment.
Location and Schedule
Work Location: Lakewood Ranch Library, 16410 Rangeland Parkway, Bradenton, Florida 34211
Work Hours: 40 hours per week, variable schedule including evenings and weekends
Starting Hourly Range: $21.92 – $27.40
Responsibilities
- Develop youth programming and coordinate the branch’s Summer Reading Program.
- Foster relationships with local schools and organizations serving area youth; provide regular circulation desk duties.
- Design and deliver innovative youth programs for all ages, viewable in-house and through outreach efforts.
- Attend system-wide youth services and young adult programming meetings to share and receive ideas.
- Assist with planning, publicizing, and implementing youth-centered events and the Summer Reading Program.
- Provide reader’s advisory services for youth, with familiarity across materials from birth to age 18.
- Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, schools, and other county departments.
- Manage staff and volunteers during large-scale events; coordinate performer agreements and related program documents.
- Oversee procurement of programming materials and ensure resources are in place.
- Operate County vehicles for offsite programs and outreach, as needed.
- Coordinate with Programming and Outreach team to support youth and adult programming efforts.
- Maintain a safe, welcoming, and well-organized environment; apply specialized library services knowledge and exercise independent judgment as appropriate.
- Provide direct public service and related duties; monitor workflow and guide staff as needed.
- Instruct and advise employees on area-specific tasks; coordinate work with other units and participate in system-wide meetings and policy development.
- May perform technical tasks in the assigned area, such as circulation procedures and shelving.
- Provide information services to patrons and collect fees for late, damaged, or lost materials.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and two years’ experience in Library and Information Science (MLS) or closely related field (e.g., Education, Library Science, Engineering, Design).
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- One year of customer service experience.
- Valid driver license with Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire.
- Experience or education in children’s and teen literature and programming preferred for Youth Programming Coordinator.
- One year of supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions; organize work and meet deadlines.
- Strong oral and written communication, exceptional organizational and multitasking skills.
- Understanding of regulatory compliance and computer applications, including library software.
- Professional interpersonal communication; ability to explain information clearly; capable of working under moderate supervision.
- Creative thinking and a passion for innovation and learning.
