Overview

Library Coordinator, Access Services at The George Washington University. Provides daily supervision of Access Services operations and supports training, development, and evaluation of Access Services wage staff. Handles patron inquiries, problems, and policy-related decisions, escalating complex issues to management. Utilizes library systems for routine record maintenance and oversees desk activities and patron services.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a high level of customer service to library patrons in a fast-paced physical environment.
  • Perform daily Access Services duties: provide building access, verify visitor eligibility, supply policy and procedural information, check in/out materials, create or correct library accounts, perform basic cataloging of circulating items, shelve returned materials and reserve items, and provide basic reference to patrons.
  • Handle facility requests in the absence of the Library Operations team.
  • Interpret library policies and assist users in accessing the building, collections, and services.
  • Coordinate daily activities for two service desks by communicating work expectations and adjusting activities based on department needs.
  • Resolve routine and some complex questions by applying discretion and judgment; consult with management as needed.
  • Assist in training and monitoring staff on automated systems such as Alma and PassagePoint and other Access Services duties (shelving, circulation, entrance services).
  • Provide feedback to the Access Services manager on employee performance and contribute to user guides and training materials.
  • Participate in shelving activities, sorting, shifting, and shelving according to Library of Congress call numbers.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a public or academic library or customer service environment is preferred.
  • Customer service experience (preferably in a library setting).
  • One-year supervisory experience preferred.
  • Willingness, availability and flexibility to work a combination of daytime, evening, night, weekend and overnight hours.
  • Ability to work independently and diplomatically with patrons and library staff.
  • Ability to recognize the basic elements in a bibliographic citation.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress call number classification or ability to learn.
  • Office computing skills and internet literacy; ability to learn a variety of systems and software.

Hiring Range: 24.77

Work Schedule: There are 3 shifts requiring coverage: 1) Monday–Friday, 8am–8pm with some weekend flexibility; 2) Sunday–Thursday 9pm–8am; 3) Tuesday–Saturday 10pm–8am.
