Overview

Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences seeks a dynamic and experienced music educator to serve as Upper School Music teacher to cover an 8-week Baby Bonding leave. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in jazz and music theory, be comfortable arranging / orchestrating music for student performances, and demonstrate a commitment to supporting student growth through both performance and academic work.

Responsibilities

  • Teach five classes: four jazz classes and two music theory classes.
  • Direct jazz classes in preparation for an Upper School on December 13 concert (with optional informal performances as student interest allows).
  • Design and assign relevant coursework to prepare students for performances.
  • Write personalized student grade narratives.
  • Arrange and orchestrate music in collaboration with students.
  • Ability to use a music notation software of your choice (Sibelius, Finale, MuseScore, etc.) to arrange music to create individual parts when necessary
  • Ability to perform musical phrases in all keys and teach improvisation on jazz standards.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, advisors, and colleagues regarding student progress and behavior.

Concerts & Events

  • Prepare ensembles for one major concert on Saturday, December 13 (attendance required).
  • Coordinate with the Arts Administrator, Administrative Coordinator, and Events Team to schedule, host, and support concerts and community music events.
  • Coordinate with relevant departments to oversee equipment movement and sound reinforcement for concerts and student events.

Leadership & Administrative Duties

  • Attend all Upper School Faculty meetings.
  • Participate in Curriculum Development Committee meetings.
  • Supervise and host homeroom meetings with 11th-grade students.
  • Supervision of students during lunch in the Alley on Tuesdays.
  • Strong background in jazz performance and pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach improvisation and music theory at the high school level.
  • Experience arranging, orchestrating, and notating music using notation software.
  • Ability to rehearse and prepare student ensembles for performance.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Prior teaching experience with high school students preferred.
