In-School Elementary Art Teacher – San Mateo Foster City School District

This is an art teacher opportunity in the San Mateo Foster City School District. The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) Art4Schools Program seeks energetic and dependable Art Teachers to serve partner schools in San Mateo County. This is a non-exempt hourly or salaried position with 3 to 4 days of teaching per week. The Art Teacher will teach at assigned school sites weekly during the school year. The ideal candidate will be committed to teaching creativity effectively and inspiring students to develop a love of art. Professional development and training are provided.

Responsibilities

  • Teach CSMA art lessons meeting California State VAPA Standards to students in public elementary/middle school settings. Curriculum and lesson planning are accessible online.
  • Attend faculty meetings and trainings to enhance curriculum understanding and teaching skills. A mentor program is available for new CSMA teachers.
  • Create a fun and meaningful learning environment while providing a solid artistic foundation.
  • Maintain regular communication with on-site school staff and CSMA to ensure program success.
  • Curate a community art show at the end of the year displaying student artwork.

Qualifications / Skills

  • Active artist with a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Art, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with elementary/middle school students (ages 4-13) in a classroom setting and strong classroom management.
  • Ability to teach multiple art disciplines and styles, particularly painting and drawing.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with school partners, staff, and CSMA.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Competent computer skills and familiarity with Zoom, Google Workspace, and MS Office.
  • Reliable transportation to assigned school sites and occasional trips to CSMA in Mountain View, CA.

Physical Demands

  • Occasional sitting, climbing or balancing; occasional stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and use of hands; ability to reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
