Overview

Job Summary:

The Communication Specialist plays a vital role in advancing Sinte Gleska University’s communications strategy, media presence and outreach. This position ensures accurate culturally respectful representation of SGU to the Sicangu Lakota Oyate, Indian community and the broader public. By managing communications across platforms, creating multimedia content and supporting events, the Communication Specialist strengthens SGU’s visibility and mission.

Sinte Gleska University is seeking a creative, outgoing, and self-motivated individual to manage SGU’s communications, media platforms, and public outreach. This role supports SGU’s television station, YouTube channel, social media, print publications, and event promotion.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage SGU’s website, social media, newsletters, and video content.
  • Operate SGU’s TV station and co-manage the YouTube channel.
  • Capture and edit photos and videos for projects and events.
  • Write and edit articles; return drafts to authors for their revisions (no publishing without approval).
  • Support event planning, fundraising campaigns, and program promotion.
  • Work with Wanbli Ho on distribution and advertising assistance.
  • Provide receptionist/secretary support (phones, scheduling, clerical tasks).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Associate’s degree in Communications and Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Related field or equivalent work/real-world experience.
  • Strong writing, media production, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in video/photo editing and content management.
  • Ability to create/manage databases and datasets.
  • Outgoing, adaptable, and willing to travel.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Lakota culture.
  • Experience in higher education/nonprofit communications.
  • Commitment to SGU’s mission and the ability to work respectfully in a Tribal community.
  • A prospective candidate will have a minimum of 4-6 years’ experience in media/ marketing/ promotion related Field.

The SGU employee agrees to maintain strict confidentiality regarding FERPA, HIPAA, and the contents of all Sinte Gleska University correspondence, student records, personnel files and fiscal data.
