Overview
We are seeking a Senior User Experience Designer to join our User-Centered Design team within the Surgical Robotics Operating Unit. In this role, you will create intuitive and safe digital user interface solutions that align with the expectations and capabilities of surgeons and surgical staff, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and usability. You will be responsible for improving usability workflows, reducing risks for patients and staff, and ensuring consistency with our brand and design standards.
Responsibilities
- Define and implement digital user interfaces using the Surgical Operating Unit’s design system for complex medical devices.
- Conduct and participate in user research activities, translating findings into actionable design solutions.
- Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, and Research & Technology to make informed product feature and functionality decisions.
- Partner with agile teams, working closely with software engineers, copywriters, and UX designers.
- Contribute to concept development for new products and platforms using systems thinking and user-centered design methodologies.
- Conceptualize and visualize product designs and interactions using Figma, creating digital prototypes with Figma or Principal.
- Develop and refine wireframes, prototypes, style guides, and user flows, while communicating interaction concepts using Figma, Miro, and PowerPoint.
- Produce detailed final design documentation to support engineering handoffs and design requirements across shared platforms (Jama, Jira, etc.).
- Generate innovative ideas informed by design thinking, user research, heuristic evaluation, and accessibility standards.
- Support the creation of technical documentation, including user manuals, IFUs, quick reference guides, and instructional content.
Top Technical Skills
- Strong creative, analytical, and problem-solving skills with sound technical judgment, leadership, and interpersonal abilities to collaborate across R&D, Marketing, Engineering, and Systems.
- Ability to visually present, communicate, and workshop design visions, research insights, and detailed designs using Figma, Miro, and Microsoft Office tools.
- Bonus: Familiarity with regulatory standards such as 21 CFR Part 820.30, IEC 62366-1, ANSI HE75, ISO 14971, and FDA usability guidance.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field (or equivalent experience/certification).
- Experience: Minimum 6 years in UX Design, with at least 2 years in the medical device or related industry preferred. Proven track record as a UX lead for new product development.
- Experience across all phases of the product development process, from research and concept development to front-end design, prototyping, user testing, and refinement.
- Hands-on experience creating wireframes, prototypes, storyboards, and user flows with a strong problem-solving mindset.
- Skilled in working with agile or scrum teams, balancing big-picture strategy with detailed product-level design.
- Experience in designing interfaces for devices or large systems, including proof-of-concept modeling to communicate design intent.
